NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. For some time past complaints have been received from business people of the theft of electric light globes from under the verandahs of their premises, and late on Monday night quite a number were taken from shop fronts in High street. The result of the sheep weight-guess-ing competition in connexion with the North Canterbury ploughing match was as follows: —Actual dead weight of sheep 138 Jib: J. Brosnan, 136J1b, 1; A. Cambridge, 141ilb, 2. In the stepping competition the measured distance was 78ft 2in, and the nearest were: F. Loffhagen (Rangiora), 78ft and J. Andersen (Christchurch), 78ft (equal). There were eleven gursses of only an inch out. The sheep was fattened by Mr J. Fitzgibbon, who also had charge of it at the show, and the contest brought in £lB 12s. The stepping competition was in charge of Mr J. Briggs, and brought in £lO 14s. There was a good attendance at the Oddfellows' fortnightly euchre tournament held on Monday night. The prizewinners were: Ladies, Miss M. Kirk 1, Mrs B. Dench 2? men, Mr E. J. Clark 1, Mr P. Doljby 2. OMIHI. Another of a scries of card matches for the Dr. Thompson Challenge Cup was played at Omihi on Monday evening when a team from the Loyal Amberley Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., played the local team. The visitors were entertained to supper. Bro. C. Adams, on behalf of the Amberley team, returned thanks for the hospitality received, Bro. D. Croft responding. As a result of the recent hare drives, the Lodge social fund will benefit to the extent of £lO. ROTHERHAM. Great interest was evinced in the hockey match on Saturday, when the Cheviot hockey team travelled to Rotherham and played the third game in the competition for the Mount Palm Shield. The game proved a most interesting one for the spectators, as during the first half the play appeared fairly even, and half-time was reached with no score. In the second half the Cheviot forwards played well, with splendid passing, and were unlucky in not scoring, but the Rotherham backs managed to hold their own. and the game ended in a draw, without either side scoring. Mr C. T. Moor refereed the game. In the evening the hockey club held a dance in the hall to entertain their visitors. The dance was well attended, the Cheviot and Culverden footballers helping to swell tho numbers. The music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Danielson, and Mr D. dark was M.C. HAWARDEN. A very pleasant gathering was held in the Mason's Flat School recently, when the young ladies of the district entertained Miss Elsie Wright at a kitchen evening, in view or her approaching marriage. Miss Philpott, in presenting the guest of honour with the large number of gifts brought by her friends, expressed the regret felt that Miss Wright was leaving the district, and wished her every happiness in her new life. Miss Wright suitably replied. During the evening, music for the dancing was supplied by Mr C. Surridge, while Mr Barker carried out tho duties of M.C.

LEITHFIELD. On Saturday afternoon the Woodend B team visited Leithfield, where a basketball match was played against the local ladies' team, resulting in a win for tho home team by 38 points to 2. Mrs Penfold was referee, Miss Mander was scorer, and Mr W. A. Kelcher was timekeeper. Tea was dispensed by the Leithfield Club, after which Miss Percy (Woodend) spoke on behalf Of the visiting team, Miss P. James responding for Leithfield. During the week-end Messrs H, May, D. W. Palmer, and W. G. Jamieson formed a working bee which trimmed school hedges and repaired several chains of the Terrace road entrance and the school grounds. In the near future the basketball court and the main entrance will be shingled. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Leithfield Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., N.G., Bro. Q. Parker presided over a fair attendance of members. Sick pay was passed to six members. Two other important matters were dealt with by the Lodge ... ~ *, „ ' The intermittent rams which have fallen during the past six weeks have allowed work on the farms to be proceeded with. Some interruption was occasioned by a series of hard frosts, which made it impossible for tillage operations or for potato digging to take place until after 9 a.m. Last Thursday proved bitterly cold, but the distnc was fortunate in not receiving the full force of tho sou'-wester. Since then nor'-west conditions have prevailed. There is, however, plenty of moisture in the ground to ensure germination. AKAROA. A meeting, convened by the Banks Peninsula A. and P. Society, was held in the Duvauchelle Hall on Friday to discuss the question of holding a Peninsula Bay at the forthcoming Christchurch Winter Show. There were present': Messrs S. W. Birdliug (prudent), F. Coop, J. V. Chapman, W. H. Taylor, representing the Banks Peninsula A. and P. Society; D. McKay, S. J. Vogan, J. Mould, Peninsula Horse Show; and F. Dans (president), G. Armstrong, T. McCaugkan, and G. Davidson, Akaroa Advancement Association. In outlining the scheme of what he thought toe Peninsula could exhibit in the way ot produce, Mr Birdling said that, owing to the short notice, and telephonic communication being interrupted witu the Eastern Bays through the snow storms, it was a pity that their representatives were not present. It was decided to have a bay at the show, and members were detailed to procure what exhibits were available in their portions of the district. Messrs G. Armstrong, F. Davis, andC. R Moore were appointed delegates to attend a meeting in Christchurch to receive the reports of the canvassers Offers or assistance were received from a number of people. The matter has been taken up enthusiastically by Peninsula residents, and there is no doubt that the exhibition from here will be one of the best competing, as there are several industries which are of a purely local nature. The local team of footballers visited Little Akaloa on Saturday to play their last match in the banner competition. The home team won decisively by 25 to nil. Owing to the state of the Summit road after the recent snowfall, the Le Bon's team, did not undertake the journey to Little River, and that match will prdbably bo played during this week. OKAIN'S BAY. There war a moderate attendance at the weekly euchre party and dance in aid of the hall funds. Prizes were won as follows:—Ladies, Mrs E. Moore 1, Mrs P. Harris 2; men, Mr P. Grant 1, Mi* Eeg. Mason and Mr Macintosh (equal) 2. Music for the dancing was supplied by local players, and Mr L. McEwan was M.C. The Okain's Bay schoolboys'football team competed in the seven-a-side tournament at Akaroa last week, and were defeated by the Little Eiver team. On the same day the schoolgirls met the Akaroa schoolgirls in a friendly match of basketball, and were beaten by 14 points to 6. Mrs Arnold Ware, who was admitted to the Akaroa Hospital seriously ill with pneumonia, is now progressing favourably. At a meeting of the Loyal Hand of Friendship Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.TJ., held on Saturday, Sister C. Boleyn, N.G., presided over a small attendance. The Loyal Waircwa Lodge sent an invitation to their annual ball. The Lodge later adjourned to the residence of Bro. Eric Moore, P.G., where he and-Sister Moore entertained the members at supper, cards, and wireless. A vote of thanks to Sister and Bro. Moore concluded a very pleasant evening. WEST MELTON. There was a good attendance at the fortnightly social in aid of the West Melton Hall funds. Prizes for the euchre were awarded .as follows: Ladies, Mrs 0. McKay 1, Miss Iris Chambers 2; men, Mr T. Summerfield 1, Mr J. Fowler 2. Supper was provided by the ladies. The "music for the dance was supplied by Miss Thompson, Miss Whyte and Miss Chambers. Mr L. Chambers and Mr G. Jowcts acted as M.C.'s.

DARFIELD, Mi- Geo. H. Juad, chairman of the Malvern Power Board, and Mr H. H. Barrs, secretary-engineer to the Board, left recently to attend the Power Board conference at Wellington. The ladies of the district intend holding a sewing guild every Becond Thursday,- in order to raise funds towards the forthcoming gala. • Mrs J. Gallagher is at present in the Public Hospital, Christchurch.

SPRINGSTON. There was a good attendance at the weekly euchre and dance run under the auspices of the Social Committee on Saturday evening. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs P. V. Bailey 1, Miss Jessie McKay 2; men, Mr Jas. Greaves 1 Mr J. McLeod 2. After supper had been served, .the room was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by Mr it. Wall Mrs W. Greenslade contributing an extra. A Monte Carlo waltz was held, and this was won by Missi T. Winchester (Lakeside) and Mr G. Jim. Mr G. Hill was M.C. SPRINGSTON SOUTH. The series of weekly euchre tournaments and dances were advanced a further stage on Saturday evening. The prize-winners were: Miss Grace Rowell and Mr Sam Bennett. After supper had beon served the -al dance was held, Mrs A. H. Clarke supplying the music. Mr E. Hoskins was M.O. The prizewinners at the previous week's tournament were Mrs Musson and Mr C. Woods.

KIRWEE. The Kirwee School Commits held its fortnightly social evening in the schoolroom on Saturday. There was silarge attendance, and the evening wa3 most enjoyably spent in card playing and dancing. Those who won the prizes for the progressive euchre match were Mrs A. L Stewart, Miss W. Burt, Mr A. L. Stewart, and Mr A. G. Hart. After supper the room was cleared ™ r dancing, the music being supplied by Mrs A L. Stewart and Mr A. G. Hart. Mr H. G.'Weir was M.C. A large number of the residents or Courtenay and Halkett recently paid a surprise visit to the new residence or Mr and Mrs G. Seaton. The visitors received a warm welcome, and the evening was pleasantly passed in card playing and dancing. At 10 p.m. the card playing ceased, the prizes being won by Mrs R. Henderson and Mr G. Seaton. jun. After supper dancing was enjoyed to music siiDplied bv Mesdames R. C. Kelham and D. Penny, and Miss V. Roper. Songs were contributed by Mrs R. C. Kelham and Miss Phoebe Roner. Mr C. Page thanked the host and hostess for the.welcome accorded <to the visitors. The Rev. R. C. Kelham also spoke, and hoped that Mr and Mrs Seaton would lone be spared to enjoy their new home. Mr B. T. Rener replied on behalf of Mr and Mrs Sr -n.

SOUTHBRIDGE. The final night of the St. James's Church series of card tournaments was a great success. The first prizes for the evening were won by Miss Chapman and Mr Mackrell, and the second prizes by Mrs Thoroughgood and .Mr Gosden. The winners of the aggregate first prizes were Mrs Gosden and Mr Lilley.

KILLINCHY.

A service was held in the Killinchy Hall on Sunday evening, in memory of the late Mr William McClure, ho passed away last week. The hall was fittingly draped in black and mauve, and the preacher was the Rev. T C. Young, 8.A.. minister of the Leeston Presbyterian charge, who took his text from the words, "What is your life!" (James 4-14). Miss G. Brooks sang a solo and an appropriate anthem was rendered by the choir. The preacher referred to the sorrow throughout Killinchy at the premature death of Mr McClure, who was a native of that district, and to his service in the Great War, from which he had returned greatly impaired in health.
