PETROL STATIONS.

LARGE TANKS OR SMALL? CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. Petrol stations and the quantity of petrol to be stored in them formed &e subject of a report to the City Council last night from the By-laws and Finance Committee. The report stated that an inspection had been made of the majority of the petrol stations, including practically all the larger stations, with a view to ascertaining the maximum quantity of petrol that the committee would recommend the Council to allow to be stored. The opinion of the proprietors was unanimous; They desired to be allowed to continue with tanks of approximately 500 gallons capacity each. It was pointed out that smaller tanks in the case of more popular brands of spirit would be insufficient to cater for the demands for weekends and quite inadequate to such periods as Easter and Christmas. Several proprietors stated that they considered the larger tanl:s_ entailed less risk as they required filling a proportionately fewer number of times. ITie committee decided to considei each application on its merits. With regard to the lay-out of the stations and the style of buildings erected thereon, the committee recommended that the Town Planning Committee should insist upon a more clesira'We type of building, preferably in brick or concrete, tiled with white tiles for about four foet from the ground level on all parts of such building facing streets or pubHc places. Underground Tanks. Tho committee had reconsidered Messrs A S. Paterson and Co.'s application for permission to install underground tanks for the storage of motorspirit in bulk on the vacant land adjoining their spirit store in Selwya street. At the meeting of tho Council, held oil the 6th instant, permission was granted for the installation of oii3 tank, subject to certain conditions which were fully set out in the committee's report. The committee now recommended that permission be granted for the installation of one additional tank subject to the samo conditions. The report was adopted.
