FIRES.
SPECTACULAR BLAZE. HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED. With a strong sou'-west gale to fan the flames, and with no water to stem them, a fire broke out last evening in a 5-roomed house, situated in Munday's road, Burwood. Tho house was owned and occupied by Mr J. McCreanor. Mr McCreanor, who had recently moved into the house, was carrying out a number of alterations. Half of tho old house had been removed, and a new building had been erected alongside it. Shortly after 6.30 o'clock the fire commenced, and soon had a strong hold. Both the old and new buildings caught fire, and burned unchecked. A large number of people, attracted by the glare, soon arrived on the scene, but they were unable to quell the blaze. Unfortunately the house was situated outside the City boundary. With sparks flying in all directions, it was not long before tho outbuildings were ablaze, the fire spreading to an adjoining haystack, which added greatI ly to the already brilliant scene. The i gorse hedge in front of the residence i was also burning, the bystanders being > able to do vary little to prevent tho fire from spreading. The fire burned brightly for about three-quarters of an hour, the house and its contents, and the outbuildings being totally destroyed. It is not known whether the house was occupied at the time, and the origin of the fire is also a mystery.
HOUSE BURNED AT WOOLSTON. At 2 a.m. yesterday fire destroyed a six-roomed house, situated at 859 Perry road, Woolston. The house was owned and occupied by Mr Albert When the brigade arrived the fire had taken a firm hold, but good work was done in saving the detached buildThe dwelling was insured for *7OO in the Australian Alliance Office, and the outbuildings were insured for £250 in the Phoenix Office. A distance of about a mile had to be traversed to give * the alarm. OCCUPANTS? HASTY EXIT. (NtBSS ASSOCIATION TILBOaiM.) MAETON, April & A fire at 10.30 last night destroyed a dwelling at Bulls, owned by G. Bending, of Auckland, and occupied by Albert Wilkins. The occupants had to make a hasty exit, saving nothing. The house and contents were covered by insurance. The adjoining frouse was saved by the good work of a bucket brigade. Be prepared.
