The Duke and Duchess of York arrived and were welcomed by enormous crowds, in beautifully fine weather. The city was gaily decorated, and a general half-holiday was declared. Responding to a civic address the Duke said he wanted to see as much as possible of the problems confronting employers and employees, lie and the Duchess desired to render a service to Australia and they felt the best way to do that was to "see things for themselves and relate their experiences to others at Home on their return. The Duke has telegraphed to the Gov-ernor-General asking that an extra week's holiday at Piaster be granted to school children throughout the Commonwealth. QUEENSLAND'S WELCOME. (A.C3T2ALUX AS» K-H. CA3LB ABSOCIATIOB.) BRISBANE, April 6. The Duke and Duchess of York were welcomed all along the route of their journey by huge crowds of cheering people. Many inspections of returned soldiers, Boy Scouts, and Girl Guides were held, and the usual addresses of welcome, and bouquets, were presented at each stopping place. Tho night was spent at Toowoomba, where the Duke paid an informal visit to the Soldiers' Club.
DUKE'S ESCAPE. BUILDING COLLAPSES WHERE HIS CAR WAS. (BV CA3LS—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPTRtGHT.) (AUSTBALIAN AND K.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) SYDNEY, April 6. When the Duke of York was in Sydney attending a returned soldiers luncheon in the Wentworth Hotel, opposite which Doctor Lang's old Scots Church was being dismantled, the workmen had undermined the tower in preparation for dropping it, and were waiting till the crowd should get away. ~->,, A few minutes after the Duke Icrt, and the crowd had dispersed, the tower suddenly and unexpectedly settled down, and a quantity of debris crashed through a fence where numbers, of people had been standing. Some of the debris lodged close to where the Duke's car had been parked. HOLIDAY FOR N.Z. SCHOOLS. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGEASI.) WELLINGTON, April 6. The Governor-General has received the following telegram from his Royal Highness the Duke of York: "The Duchess and I hope very much that every school in New Zealand may bo given an extra holiday at Easter to commemorate our visit.—(signed) Albert." His' Excellency has replied to the following effect: "Your Royal Highness' kind thought for the children is deeply appreciated by the Government and people of New Zealand. The Government is communicating with the Boards of Education and other controlling authorities, with a view to giving effect to your Royal Highnesses wishes."
