♦ PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO TH* PBB83.) GREYMOUTH, April 5. Mr M. McLeod, Chief Inspector of Schools for the Canterbury district, left to-day for Christchurch. Mrs Ellis and Miss C. Ellis, who have been sketching at Otira, returned to-day to Christchurch. Mrs W. Gilmour, of Ailsa, Scotland, who has been on an extended visit to ner daughter, Mrs J. McLean, Sawyers C-eek road, left to-day for Wellington, en route to Scotland. Mrs D. C. Beard left to-day for Wellington, en route to England, on a twelve months' holiday trip. Mr J. McLean left to-day for Christchurch and Wellington. Mr J. Gilbert (ivumara) left to-day for Wellington. Mr and Mrs G. T. Moss' arrived from Christchurch this afternoon. Mr W. Balderstone (Blackball) left to-day for Wellington. Miss B. Petre, who has been on an extended recuperative visit to Arthur's Pass, returned to-day to Christchurch. Mr l'~. L. 'l'urley left to-day for Wellington. Mr Roland Fairhall (Marsden road) left to-day on a holiday trip to Australia.

Mrs H. Pelhng arrived this afternoon from Christchurch, and is the guest of her sister, Mrs R. Smith, Kilgour road. Mr J. Cochrane, who has been visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs W. Cochrane, Ki'igour road, returned to Ashburton this morning. Mrs J. McLean will leave for Wellington on Thursday. Mr Garnet Winchester, who has been transferred to the Christchurch branch of the Union Bank of Australia, was entertained last evening by the members of Trinity Institute and presented with a gold Eversharp pencil. Mr Winchester left to-day for Christchurch. He has been succeeded at Grey by Mr E. B. Clarkson, of the Blenheim branch.

During the Westport Jockey Club' 3 Meeting yesterday Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., on behalf of Westport friends, presented a wallet to Mr C. E. Craig, who is leaving for Auckland to take up journalistic work.

Mrs C. Robertson, of Sydney, who has been spending a holiday at Grey, left for Christclnircli this morning, en route to Australia. She was accompanied to Christchurch by her brother, Mr D. M. Ilobeitson.

Among the inward passengers by today's express were Mrs Rudge, Messrs J. S. Langford, C. Tipper, and Nyall. Weddings. At Holy Trinity Church this morning the marriage was solemnised of Miss Thelma Russell, daughter of Mrs Russell, of the Park hotel, and Mr Clias. Russell, son of Mrs R. Ford, of Harihari. The Ven. Archdeacon Carr officiated. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr J. Russell, was attended by Misses M. Phelan and M. Preston. Mr N. Jones was best man, and Mr R. Curtain was groomsman. The wedding party was subsequently entertained by the bride's mother.. Mr and Mrs Russell left by the express, en route to the North Island, where the honeymoon will bo spoilt. On the eve of his mariage Mr Russell was presented by the members of the railway loco, staff and other branches with a dinner set. The marriage took place yesterday at Wesley Church, Reefton - , of Mr F. G. Newcombe, second son of Mr Wm. Newcombe, of Maruia, and Miss liithel Lynette Brislane, of Herbert street, Greymouth. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. Robinson, The marriage was solemnised at St. Stephen's Church, Reefton, on Wednesday evening last of Nurse Mary Olive Tibbies, eldest daughter of Mr p. 0. Tibbies, of Maori Creek, and Mr . J. T. Nicholls. eldest son of Mrs and the late Mr H. Nicholls, of Blackpoint. The Rev. J. W. Bloyce was the officiating clergyman.

Arahura Stock Sale. At the Arahura stock sale there was only a small yarding. . ' Prices recorded were a good deal better than at the previous sale. Good ox beef realised to 325, heifers from 25s to 30s, and cow beef from 20s to 30s per hundred. There were no sheep yarded. „ 11 ! Opossum Season. The Westland Acclimatisation Society has received advice that, the opossum season for New Zealand will be open as usual this year. *he Societies of Buller, Grey, and Westland have asked for a uniform season far the Coast, and it is expected that the duration proposed will be granted, due notification of which will be given later. Ideal Weather. Ideal weather is being experienced on the West Coast, with summery conditions during the days and clear, starry evenings. Coastwise Road. It is understood that contracts for the bridges of the Grey-Westport coastwise road are to be let at an early date, and that there is every possibility of the road being open to traffic within the next fifteen months. Wednesday Half -Holiday. According to legal " advice the petition recently presented to the Grey Borough Council praying that a poll be taken on the question of the .weekly half-holiday, does not comply with the provisions of the Shops and Offices Act, ft being alleged that the petition is insufficiently signed. _ It now appears certain that the desired poll wall not be taken on April 27th. Girl Guides. Mesdames W. R. Wilson .(Dominion Commissioner of Girl Guides) > Eley (Dominion secretary), and A. o. (West Coast Commissioner) left this morning to attend a conference of Guide Commissioners, which is to be held in Christchurch. The two firstnamed have been on a visit of mspeetion of the various companies of the Girl Guides of the West Coast. Waiho Tourist Traffic. Important electrical extensions, including the installation of a fifty h.p. turbine, will shortly be put in hand at the Waiho Hotel to meet the requirements of the increasing tourist traffic. League Football. At a meeting of the executive of the West Coast Rugby League Centre, it was resolved to ask the New Zealand Council to hold an open enquiry into the disqualification of the seven League players who toured England. A letter was read from Mr C. Saunders, on behalf of the Hornby Club, requesting a series of games on the Coast at Easter. It was decided to reply to A[r Saunders stating that the Centre agreed to the visit. The following committees were appointed:—Finance committee: Messrs Wingham, Thomas, and McKane; fixtures committee: Messrs Buckley, Patterson," and the selectors; ground committee, Messrs McKnne, Thomas, Moore, and Kiely; postponement committee: Messrs Moore, Wingham, and the chairman.

West Coast Rugby Union.

Mr A. Adams presided over a large attendance of members at the annual meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union this evening.

The treasurer, Mr J. Kyle, in presenting the balance-sheet," stated it showed & better position than last year,

despite the heavy expenses involved in sending teams on tour. The receipts totalled £623 4s lOd. The expenditure included £l5O to the Grey Trotting Club and £2ll 12s 4d for touring expenses. The balance-sheet was adopted. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr A. Adams; vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. Guy, T. Mcintosh, and A. White; treasurer, Mr J. Kyle; secretary Mr N. W. Jones; trustees, Messrs A. Adams and J. Kyle; custodian, JMr J. Williams; resident delegate to New Zealand Bugby Union. Mr T. O'Callaghan. It was decided to communicate with the 'Varsity Football Club, Christchurch, in order to arrange a match with a Coast representative team on Easter Saturday. It was resolved to open the season on Saturday, April 30th. It was decided to write immediately to the Wellington Kugby Union and the Ashburton Sub-Union, inviting them to send teams this season to tour the West Coast.
