PAPANUI FIRE. EIGHT-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. An eight-roomed dwelling, No. 87 Bligh's road, Papanui, was completely destroyed by fire last night. It was owned and occupied by Mrs A. Moss, who left home about 6 p.m. Two fire engines, one from the St. Albans station and the other from the City, were in attendance, but the building was completely destroyed before any water could be procured. Even when the water was available the supply was very meagre, fully 300 yards of hose having to be laid from a small ditch at the corner of Idris road. The eastern wall of the adjoining house, owned by Mr T. Jones, which was onlv 15ft away, had the weatherboards slightly charred with the heat The fire was first noticed by one of the boys from the Presbyterian Orphanage, who immediately notified the matron and gave the alarm. The house was insured for £750 in the Union office, and the contents for £l5O in the Phoenix office. Be prepared. See that you have adequate fire protection.
