AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. MATSON and CO. REPORT ON L. ADDINGTON MARKET AS FOLItfWS:— STORE SHEEP. The entry occupied all available pens, and Included numerous North Island consignments, and re-offered lots from the recent Fairs, together with a good percentage of local sheep and Banks Peninsula consignments. LAMBS. —The sale opened with lambs, and for the most part they represented consignments of backward and indifferent sorts, but throughput the market there were numerous pent of lambs that had been se.*ed, and the ewos, wherever the English Leicester strain •was predominant, commanded the keenest of competition, and the best of last -week's price* were recorded. Wether lambs very forward and speedy fatteners sold irregularly at from lant week's prices fo a shade easier. AH other consignments, including mixed lots, where they lacked condition and uniformity ef Vfool or evenness cf carcase, sold at about 2« a head below .-cent markets. BREEDING EWES.—Two-tooth > North Island shipments, which were generally of Jiigh standard, at auction brought up to 30s 6d. These sheep r. month ago would have probably commanded 4s to 5s more than today. The enquiry seems to have changed, as those graziers who were looking for exhibition consignments are ajmost non-existent, and the few that were in the market have become very conservative with their competition. The writer saw ewes sold, such as ■Williams's top owes, at 30s 6d. The jnedinm-grown and even wool two-tooth ewes from North Island sold anywhere from about 26sto 295, smnll and inferior two-tooth ewes sold from 23s to 255, four-year-old breeding ewes with reliable mouths were selling from 16s to 19s, and one extraordinary good lot cf two, four, sis. and eight-tooths sold at 265. Any sheep sold below 35s was only regarded as a four-year-old or ss a sound-mouth by the vendors, and the public accepted the joke, j and the prices bid at auction represented the fullest value. Several lines of North Canterbury ewes, halfbreds. four-year-olds were sold round about 26s (one outstanding line making 295), but there were numerous pens cf re-offered halfbreds that sold from lis to '£l, and one had to stretch their imagination to convince themselves that they were four-year-old ewes. As a matter of fact, the bulk of the four-year-old ewes offered to-day Deemed to be seven and eight-year-old. The i writer would consider that fully 2000 to 4000 sheep were brought to go South, and if it had I not been for this competition, {he lower jgrades of ewes, that is from four-year-old and upwards, would have shown a decided eating. "While "it is well recognised that i it it was not for North Island sheep Can- j torbury would not be able to maintain her exports, it must not ho overlooked that numerous of our own sheep men are still banging on to the rag.tpg and hob-tail of their flocks, and a portion of their lambs. Vp to the present the Amberley, Hawarden, Culverden, and Waiau Ewe Fairs Bhow about 16,000 sheep less than 1926, and if it had Dot been for the adverse weather conditions Bnd the vagaries of the fat lamb market, it might have resulted almost in a panic had the normal weather conditions existed, but to-day the buying public is very apathetic, and it looks as though the farmer was going to ait down and allow someone else to Join the rams with the ewes, and take the *isk of feeding and wintering; unless conditions improve. Amongst the principal sales effected by ns Jvas a line of ewe lambs on behalf of Peraki Estate, which sold at 20s per head. POB BEST RESULTS CONSIGN TOUR BTOOK TO H. MATSON and CO., ADDINGTON. ' *
