NORTH BEACH LINE.

MAY BE REMOVED. HIGH COST OF RENEWAL. It is possible that the tram service from Burwood to North Beach will be discontinued and the service taken over by. buses, because the line is in Buch a condition that repairs will have to be effected or the line pulled up. During the leust session of Parliament the Christehurch Tramway Board obtained power to cease running on or io take up any particular line when certain formalities were complied with. These are as follows:—(1) The resolution of the Board must be advertised and notices to this effect posted in the trams for twenty-eight days; (2) Within eight weeks after the first publication of the notice five per cent, of the ratepayers may demand a poll; (8) In the event of a poll not being asked for, or in the event of the proposition being carried, the Governor-General wifi issue a warrant in due course giving the Board power to remove the line. The portion of the line referred to is in such a condition that renewal is imperative, and although the Board is making application to remove it, it does not necessarily follow that this will be done as there are other considerations to be taken into account. The estimated cost of renewal from Burwood to the sea is £35,000 in the old style of construction, or £40.000 in the new style of concrete and bitumen.
