SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. A Press A saw ia'ion from Nc* Plymouth says S. WiUi;, rider of Nadarinu in 'ho Stewards' Handicap •t the Taranaki J.C. s .Meeting on Saturday nas stiMicndc"! iV a «cek for tareless riding. SavonarA expected to inn prominently in tbo hurdle race ar. Duncdin on Saturday, but hi' .knocked u p.inel <i>il of iho knee in front of tlio the stand ;md was never afterwards mar tlio front. Kaikahu was going well in the liurtllo race on Saturday when he tipped out five furlongs Irom home, but it is doubtful it he would have lieaten Cartoon, who won very toniiortahly. lJonumcl must bo the canto of much worry to his connexion*, especially to his trainer, who has been disappointed with hi in on many occasions. Honomel has lately dono work good enough to compete with tlio best llat performers, an.i he has looked the part, too, but ho will not axllop when required in lii.s races. Although lie iuinped well on •Saturday at Duncdin, fie showed no inclination to get near the leaders and disputed last berth with Js'ayonara. Hrondmoor was unfortunate to dwell cn the mark in Ihe two-vear-old event nt Duncdin, as it is wcil-uigh certain that with 'M favourable dispatch ho would lure proved a comfortablo winner. ft appears that when the barrier was lifted ho hounded out towards the outside, and some distance was covered before his rider could straighten him up. When settled down to galloping he showed remarkable speed and was gathering in the field nt every stride at the finish, hut his effort was too belated. Ho is a most promising colt and shows prospects of dovcloping into a good performer for tlio Chokebore itable.

Silver C'oot mnile amends for his first dav's drfe.it at Wiucatui by annexing tho Hopeful Handicap on Saturday. His .stiible-nialc, Don Jose, was responsible for tho early pace, but retired in tho run homo nnd finished well bark. Mv Gerard's pair of youngsters may improvo witli racing, but at the present time tliev cannot bo considered anything out of the ordinary. Calcito ran another honest race on Saturday, and alio was unfortunato to be beaten for the big end of the stako each day. Provided sho kcc[»s sound, aha will soon get on tho winning list. Brishtling ran a good race for a mile in the .President's Handicap at Dunedin on the first day, and in consequence was considered to possess a favourable chance in the Warrington Handicap on Saturday. He was never in • prominent* position, and another costly failure nad to be recorded against the Tractor gelding. Flaming Ray was galloped on when the barrier-was released in the President's Handicap on Thursday and ahowed signs of lameness when paraded on Saturday for the Warrington Handicap. She ran a fair race, however, and did well to gain third money. , Nincompoop was n good thing beaten in the Flying. Handicap at Wingatui. as with a reasonable dispatch he would have made matters interesting for Solnue. He was well supported by his connexions,' and if ho had prevailed they would have made a substantial collection of ; the stable-mate. Precious. Nincompoop made a bold bid for victory in the concluding event, but his rider wan unable to keep him back to tho field over the early stages, with the result that he failed over the last furlone. Now'that ho has struck form he tromises to earn good stake money for is owner,'Mr J. McCormack.

Front Rank appeared to be sore when doing her preliminary for the ~ big handicap at Wingatni on Saturday, bat nevertheless was made one of the beat backed favourites of the Meeting. Sho let her supporters down badly, however, and evidently was far .below Iter best. Batlloment ran a fair race in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap on Baturday. Bo was last to get moving, Mid-when ho endeavoured to get throngjh Umi field later was sent back, lib was in-a commanding position on the eutside'.at the home tnrn, but did not make any impression on the leaders wer the business end of the journey and waa a fcood way back at the post. A return of his Australian form has bees patiently awaited, but probably this - nAy not eventuate until he is need again/over there late in the year. Gold Mint's number ,waa not .in the tniwl request at Dunedin on Saturday, and seemingly the public are beginning to realise that he has been 'most, ex-, pciuin> proposition to tlieih<His party a MT|Hlhelen supported him fairly strongly, but had again to submit to * He gave quite a satisfactory ditttlky and finished very well' after bttalTbadly placed early. Gold Mint Iff i»*be taken to tho Nelson Meeting Mtf ; w«ek<and will be ridden in his engagements by F. E. Jones. Tjb« stable controlled by J. Ross at Oamaru has had a great run of success this eeasom and Mr J. Lindsay has woo • lot of races with his small team. In addition :to John Bradbury and Solrhm m had Courtly Rose enraged at .'Wla&atui on Saturday, and those interested had a mild plunge on her, but the finished outside tlie placed division. Tha Jockeys riding at the Dunedin Meeting on Saturday wore black bands on their arms as a mark of respect to the laW N. C. Dwyer. Cbkkwhcat carried the confidence of his followers in the concluding event at Wingatul on Saturday, but ne was alow to move off and was never in tho limelight, finishing well back. A coincidence in connexion with the result of the Waihola Handicap at ' Dunedin on, Saturday was that the first and second horses' were ndden by jockeys bearing tho same name and initial. J. Campbell, who rode Precious, is tho Well-known Riccartqn horseman. and the other is a promising apprentice attached to F. Shaw's stable at Wingatui. At the Adelaide Amateur Turf (Sub's Meeting on Saturday Jules Jordan, 9-1-, iron the Kidman Stakes of five furkmes, Beujcroo, 8 6. being second, and Ail <£uatity 7 7, 3. The time, 58|, is an Australian record, but still falls •hort of tho Neif Zealand record of 53 registered by Machine Gun under 11 .o at Hiccarton.

NOTES ON THE RACING (special to the fbess.)

All tho acceptors went to tho post for tho Owhiro Hurdle Handicap, and in a fairly even betting raco Kaikahu was made a slightly better favourite than Bayonara. Hat.l Prince was the first over the initial obstacle, and led past the stand from Cartoon, Kaikßha, Adjutor, Bonomcl, and Coastguard. Cartoon, jumped to the front at the mile post, aid ied along the back stretch from Hard 'Prineo, who was well clear of Kaiksliu fwi< Coastguard, with Bayonara and Bonomel lost. Hard Prince made a bad.jump at the feneo st the five furlongs post, spd Kaikahu, running in third position, struck heavily and fell. Cartoon had an advantage of four lengths from Hard Princo and Coastguard as the last fence was approached, and once into tho run homo went on to win comfortably by three lengths from Coastguard, who finished well. Adjutor gained, third money, four lengths behind Coastguard, with Hard Prince, who gave a promising display for his first race over the sticks in the South Island, a close fourth. Guncase was next, followed by Bonomel and Sayonara. The two last-named gave very disappointing displays, and were never near the leading division.

Silvor Coot Wins. The bracketed pair, Silver Coot and Don Jose, was installed the favourite selection for the Hopeful Handicap. Don Jose and Arrowy were the first to show in front, Broadmoor dwelling on the mark and giving the field a good break. Don Jose was slightly in front of Arrowy at the straight entrance, where Bilver Coot, running wide, assumed command, and, outpacing bis opponents, von in good fashion by a length and, a half from Arrowy, with Broadmoor, who made up his lost ground well, in third berth, half a length behind Arrowy. Tembroney, »ho races in the samo ownership as Comic Sons, was a close fourth, with Don Jose and Cupid's Dart next. Tho winner showed better form than on the first day, and evidently found the hard going more to his liking. Arrowy again ran a creditable race, and is likely to develop into a good stakeearner later in his career. Consistent Thorndale. Thorndale waa installed favourite for tho Warrington Handicap, and duly landed the stake after an interesting contest. Flaming Bay, who was not heavily supported in spite of her first day's victory, again shot to tlio front from the barrier rise, and piloted the field along the back, her nearest attendants being Paris, Thorndale, and Brightling. Eyed Ova assumed command at the five furlongs post, and led into the straight from Flaming Bay, Calcite, Thorndale, and Tholomon. In the run home Thorndale quickly took charge, and, throwing off challenges by Calcite and Flaming Ray, crossed the lino with a length's advantage, with Flaming Bay a head away third. Wingatui was a sioii fnurth, followed by Tholomon, Brightling, and Eyed Ova. Thorndale has proved a valuable stake-earner for his owner-trainer, F. P Claridge, who was present to see the I'tr- ! formancu after making a good recovery from bis recent operation. Favourite Prevails. Speculation was epirited in the Flying Handicap. Solrose being a pronounced favourite, carrying OT,r tight hundred more tickets than Receipt. Ths public's judgment was sound, as the two mentioned finished in the leading positions. After a short delay Lt the start, all, with tho exception ol Nincompoop, got y.way on «>qiiitablo terms, an<i after a f'jrlonc hail b*en covered Bright Mark and Dtrci:;g l?ey» were togeth-r in front of I.iv.i, Percipt, and Solrosi, with Nincompoop last. The,leaders ictiirl from the contwt at ihe top or the airtight, an.l Boirosc, getting an opening on tao nils, assured command, lad, finishing weM, hai no troubh td win by a Irncth and » half. Ni;:componp showed a lei of sptcJ in the run home, and was only a head away from Receipt at the po<t. Itsl, was clr-ao up fourth, followed by Black Duke, Arpent. lavs, Dancing Days, Bright MarV, and

Bugle X'otc. Tho winucr, who is a !.a!fsistcr to Sun l'p. is improving with racin;,\ and will probably figure as a winner ot important events later in her career. tiiic wa 5 ridden »• good rate by the apprentice A. It. Kastwood, who handled her with suunS judgment. Receipt, who was no! raced on the first day, finished well, but had no chance with the v.-ir.ner, and only gained second honours bv a narrow margin from Xin-.-am-poop, who must be ton-idered the unlucky horse in the lace. John Bradbury Wins. Opli::, who developed lameness on Friday, was the only defection from the Duncdln Jockey Club Handicap, for which Front Rank was made n strong favourite. The Chokebore fillv waa prominent for pait of the <li»tjnee, but faded out of the picture, and was » long way from the winner at the finish. From n fair start Overdrawn and Circulation were the icad.-rs, Battlement being slow to move. At the end of three furlongs Front Hark went to the front, and at the far turn leil from tho bracketed pair and John Bradbury, with the remainder bunched. John Bradbury took charge at the home turn, and led into the straight from Front Rank, Pink Note, and Vuwnrd. Front Rank dropped back at tho distance post, aid John Bradbury, hard ridden, finished on well to win bv three-quarters of a length from Pink Xote, who was the same distance in front of Vaward, with Circulation a length awav next, followed by Baldown, Battlement, Front Rank, and Overdrawn. The success of John Bradbury was confidently anticipated by his connexions, who enjoyed a royal win over the victory.

An Outsider. Despite her defeat on the first day. Spean Bridgn was again best supported for the Waihola Handicap, but she never flattered her admirers, and finished a long way back. Credit was the first to break the line, and was soon joined by Precious, ild AVork being the last to move. Precious took command three furlongs from home, and was never further troubled, winning easily from Overhaul, who was in a rear position over the first three furlongs. King Balboa also finished btrongly. and gained third money, n neck behind Overhaul. Cay .Sonnet was a head awav fourth, with Top Gear, Gold Mint, and Royal Saxon following in that order. Precious was practically neglected on the machine, and paid a substantial doublefigure dividend. She was Mopping badly over the last hundred yards, but tho break she established at the turn into tho straight enabled her to land the stake. A Splendid Race. The five, contestants for the Hazlell Memorial Handicap attracted murh attention and in a surprisingly good betting pool, Count Cavour carried tiOO more tickets than Comic Song, who was separated from Footfall by two tickets only". Tho event provided ono of tho best contests in the history of thu race. Comic Song was the early leader, but was supplanted by Countersign at the six furlong post, but the latter surrendered tho position to Comic. Song, who was slightly in front of Footfall at the straight entrance, with Countersign, Glentruin. and Count Cavour close up. At tho distance post the flvo contestants wero in line. Comic Song being on the rails, with Footfall, Countersign, Glentruin, and Count Cavour outside him, in that order. A hot struggle ensued. Countersign, Glentruin, nnd Footfall passing the post locked together. Countersign gaining tho voTdict by half a head, with Footfall a head away. Comic Song was half a length behind Footfall, nnd n length in front of Count Cavour. The performance of Countersign was meritorious, and tho manner in which sho stuck to her task showed her gamoncsH and genuine finishing qualities. Glentruin tailed the field over tho first two furlongs, and this fact probably accounted for her narrow defeat, as it was only in the last stride that sho succumbed to tho winner. Footfall ran n sterling raco and was wbll in the pictnro right up to the post. Comic Song failed to sec out tho journey, while Count Cavc.ur was not at his best, owing to sufTeriiig from leg injuries received "in tho Cup contest on Thursday. Nevertheless lie was not far away from the winner, in fact two lengths would have covered tho five runners.

Black Duke Scores. The Meeting was brought to a done with tho Abhotsford Handicap, Bilbo, nnd Bomo Kid being the only withdrawal!). Nincompoop, who was bavins his second race for the day, was entrusted with more money than Black Duke, who also had a race in tho Flying Handicap. From a moderato start Fairy Herald and Miss Winkio were tho first to show out from King 80l nnd Nincompoop, Chlckwheat, Hurdy Clurdy, and Shandrc being the last off the mark. Fairy Herald was first into tho straight, but Nincompoop took •.hargc at the distance post. In an exciting finish Black Duko shot out from the middle of the field, and settling tho pretensions of Miss Winkle. nnd Nincompoop over the deciding fifty yards secured the verdict by three parts of a length, Nincompoop Jng half a length away, in third position. Just. in front of Courtly Itoso and Knton Bells. Black Duko hus been n consistent performer for his owner-trainer, nnd gives promise of winning in better company.

NOTES ON THE RACING. (srccixt. to in pbiss.) The Taranaki Meeting was concluded at New Plymouth in fine, warm weather. The track wab fa*t. and there was a large attendance. The totalisator bandied £22,720, making £42.500 for the Meeting, against £55,249, r. decrease ot .212,749. ti. Wilson, the rider of Nadarino in the Stewards' Handicap. was s:>sii«ndcd fcr i» week for interference, Jar: liaby being the sufferer. Ardath carried £154 niore than Passir." Through i:i the Ohokc Hurdles, aud tlicy justified the centldenco placrd in them. Pendcunis i-H a hot psre from the start, and out of tho straight the first timo wac> three length* t-'.ear of Ardath. vitii San Ftnt. Gold Pea!:. Sea View. Pmsin' Through, and Reliutai following, f.rd Take T.ik« (M. Conway) tai!c:l otf. Ardatii headed P;iidennis after pasting the half-mile, and led him into the straight, with Gold Peak next to Rchutr.i, and Patiin' Through coming fast. The favourite retained his advantage, to win handsomely by five length* from Paisin' Through (who received a check at four fur-

I longs), and Kehutai was tljreepartu of i» I length away. Gold Peak was fourth, being I followed by Pendennis, Sea View, San Fera, ■vviili Take Take a furlong back.

Fartaga. Blend, and Asleep were heavily supported in the Mokau Hack Handicap, and ■with a change of riders Partaga duly won. Airtight. Troilus, Partaga, Asleep, Always, and Blend were in the van in the race for tho bend, and into the back stretch Troilus win in the lead, being followed by Partaga and Airtight. Troilus maintained his lead, being first into the straight from Partaga, with Airtight. Asleep, Blue Peter, Anolo, and | Manly following. ODce heads wero turned for home the favourite went out to win by a length. There war. a good content for second money. Asleep being three-parts of a length ahead of Airtight, with Troilus, Anolo. Manly, Blend, and Blue Feter next in order.

Jazz Uaby, making a first appearance in open company, was a pronounced favourito in the Stewards' Handicap. A good start saw Oration- first to hit tho front from Nadarino, Jazs Baby, Gaillard. and Papaponga with the last-named pair running up. Crossing the top Oration showed the way into the straight from Papaponga, Gaillard, Nadarino, The J.ainb, and Jazz Baby. At the bottom of the straight Gaillard wan nearly up with Oration, but the latter finished on surprisingly well under pressure, and beat tho Absurd gelding by a neck. Papaponga was a couple of lengths away third, with Nadarino a rlose fourth. Jazz Baby was next, and then came Merry Jest. The Lamb, and Pomna. Considering his first day's form, and the fact that Roy Reed was up, Oration paid a remarkably fine price. The race for the Taranaki Stakes was a real thriller. Of the four runners Rerenioana was a better favourito than Grand Knight, and The Hawk and Silver Mine wero by no means neglected. From the start tho quartette moved together, and after a few Stride'. Silver Mine went to tho front to lead along the back from The Hawk, with Reremoana and Grand Knight following. This was the order crossing the top and into the straight, where the two-year-old was a length in front of The Hawk, with Rereinoana (on the rails) and Grand Knight a similar distance away. Halfway up the straight The Hawk had ranged alongside Silver Mine, with Grand Knight coming on tho outside, and Reremoana moving up on tho rails. In n great finish The Hawk beat Silver Mine by n head, with Grand Knight three-quar-ters of a length away, a neck in front of Reremoana. So finished a stirring contest. A hundred yardr, from the post a Bmall dog ran out in front of the horses, nnd cheeked Grand Knight slightly, hut it ; s doubtful if ho could havo got up to brat the two in front of him.

Clarinda was a very hot favourito for tho Paul Memorial Handicap, carrying just twico as much as Mint Leaf nnd First Aero, who wero separated by a couplo of tickets! Royal Mint led through the straight the first time from Crossfire, Opa, Thundorclap, Town Bunk, First Acre, Clnrinda, nnd Mint Leaf. Along the back Crosafiro and Royal Mint were running together in tho van, the order of tho others being Thunderclap, Opa, Mint Leaf, Clnrinda, Town Bank, with First Aero last. Mint Leaf continued liis run crossing tho top, and wa s nctually first into tho straight from Royal Mint, Clarinda, Town Bank, Opa, and First Acre. In the run home Mint Leaf easily held his own, winning by n length and a half from Town Bank, with Royal Mint a head away third. Opa nnd Clarinda were closo tip, and Thunderclap and First Aero next. Tea Time carried £4l nioro than Erin-go-Bragh in tho Urunui Hack Handicap, dcßpito tho fact that tho Tea Tray gelding had drawn tho extremo outside, and it was this fact that cost him tho race. Soon after release tho order of the leading division wbb: Krin-gb-Bragh, Skypoint, Royal Acre, Tea Time, Midnight Camp, and Turkish Fire. Erin-go-Bragh and Tea Time wero together at the homo turn, with Royal Acre. Skypoint, nnd Midnight Camp closest of tho others. Sixty yards from homo tho favourite was in front, but failed to eurvivo the final daßh of Royal Acre, who beat him by a length. Skypoint was another length away, and Erin-go-Bragh, Midnight Camp, Advance Camp, Lady Acre, and Gloncoo next.

There was a big surprise in the Parituiu Juvenile Handicap, a hot favourite in McTissit beinff downed by the outsider of tho quintette. At tlio barrier rise, Miss Pat shot to the front, boing followed by Melissa, Helen, Baby Bun, and Goshawk, tho lastnamed having been left. Thero was no

change among the leaders to the finish. Miss Pat beating tho favourite by a length, with Helen the same diatanco away third. Goshawk was next.

Vivo on form should have been an oddi-on favourite for the closing event, tho Omata Hack Handicap, but she was sent out at a pood price. Sho did not get away well. The order at tho end of a furlong wa s Billikins, Toapili, Scaatar, Orcades, Quillfire, Paitonu, and Vivo. Billikir.s, Paitonu, Vivo, Flying Shot, and Orcadcs canto into the straight in close company, and in a desperate finish between Vivo ar.d Paitonu. the former obtained a dead decision. Quillfire did well to get third. » length away. Orcadcs, Senstar. Onward, and Billikins were next to cross the line.
