A man sleeping in the same room heard nothing, and was wakened by an investigating constable. Carson was a member of the Australian Expeditionary Force in the Great War, and was in receipt of a pension. He told a constable a week ago that he had lost iwo wive* and waa tired of life. He is believed to have a sister living at Belfast, Canterbury. Group Captain C. R. J. Randall, R.N"., retired, giving evidence before the Boyal Commission on Awards to Inventor's—supporting a claim by Mr Xorman Thompson, of Boulin Flantes, Pyrenees, concerning improvements in flying boats —recalled his own experiences with flying boats during the war. One occasion, he said, was the bombing of Heligoland, which would not have been possible at that time with ordinary seaplanes. The flying boats also went out searching for submarines. They would drop on the surface and put down listening apparatus, and if this revealed the presence in that region of a submarine, they would rise in the air, definitely locate" the vessel, and drop bombs.
