CHARGE OF THEFT.

"Should the charge be withdrawn I will require to know why the informati.a was laid and not proceeded with," said the Magistrate, when a man, whose name was suppressed, was charged »X* theft of £t>4 Us 6d from the OUro Hotel. Restaurant, and Boardinghouse Employees' Union Chief-Detective Cameron asked for a rem nd for a week. The information was"a private one laid by a Union secretary against the accused, who had been absent from the Citv since the offence was alleged to have taken olace There was some understanding between the accused and the I'mon that the information had been with drawn ~ . r Accused asked for the suppression of his name, as two members of his family were just starting in business. The Magistrate said that the matter would be adjourned for a week, publication of the name hein e prohibited until the facts were cone into. He ad ded that criminal proceedings could not be laid and wiihd/awn at the will of any person, and some explanation woul" have to be given when the case came up again. Chief-Detective Cameron said the Union had been advised to meet in the meantime. Accused was admitted to bail on his own recognisance of £SO, conditional on his reporthlt daily to the police.
