PROGRESS OF THE QUEEN CARNIVAL. Tho Grand Uueen Carnival, i,n conjunction with the forthcoming Military I'ugeant and Soachlight lattoo in tho Showgrounds in March and April nest, is now fairly launched. Tho Queen Carnival committees are completing thoir organisation, and already various entertainments ure afoot with the object of securing votes. The competing organisations ure to receivo half the net. profits they make, the balance going to the major undertaking—tho Military Pageant and Searchlight Tattoo. The value of a vote, has been fixed at sixpence, and tho poll will close before the end of March. Tho whole Grand Display and Competition have been launched for the benefit of tho,Cadet and Territorial Regimental Band and tho Cadet and Territorial Social Clubs. It is Biife to say that the whole populace ia interested in this work, for at somo timo practically every boy is e Cadet, and a Territorial, so that there should be a wholc-henrted response to the appeal to render their lot a little more pleasant and to assist in developing the young Now Zealander into tho right kind of citizen. The hands not only assist the defence units—they .give pleasure on occasion to thousands of the public. Then the encouragement of the spirit of competition and the love of manly games is again a worthy ideal, and the social clubs will do much to promote a friendly spirit among tho N.C.O.'s, men and boys—a ritally important matter in training for citizenship. The competing Queens in the Grand Queen Carnival, and their Maids of Honour, are listed below. In the cases of St. John Ambulance Association and tho Canterbury A. and P, Association, only Maids of Honour have been chosen, and the result of the campaign for votes will decide which is to be the Queen and which the principal Maid of Honour:— "Boadecia": Returned Soldiers' Association Queen, Miss Millicent Jennings. Maids of Honour, Misses May Andrewj Doreen Kiver, Myrtle Stewart, Edith Ward, and Joyce Jamieson. "Margaret of Anjou": St. Saviour's and Presbyterian Orphanages' Queen, the Hon. Mra Tahu Rhodes, 'Maids of Honour, Mesdamcs G. F. Hutton, H. S Barker. Guy Cotterill, and Misses Betty Cotterill, and Ngaio Maroh. "Victoria"; 4th Cadet Battalion (Canterbury Regiment) Queen, Miss Nancy Gard'ner. Maids of Honour, Misses Adrienno Acland, Molly Benn, Joan Cooper, Betty Overton, and Margaret Stevenson. "Berengaria": St. John Ambulance Association, Mrs M. Cordy (Beckenham Nursing Division), Mrs C. Peek (Medical Corps), Miss Jessie Pegler (Cbristchurch Nursing Division), Miss F. N. Sharman (Selwyn Nursing Division), and another to be appointed for the Ashburton Ambulance and Nursing Division.

Little (Hurunui District), Miss Mnnhern Parkinson (Peninsula District), Misß Marjorie Carpenter (Kaiapoi District), and in a day or bo will be announced the remaining two Maids of Honour representing Christchurch and Ellesmere Districts respectively. —1
