ACCIDENT AT AUCKLAND. CAUSE STILL A MYSTERY. 1 [TKi: PSESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, February 11. .V t:..:'. conductor, .James M. Slater. w.>>'. with a tragic death in Anzao avenue, tonight, tho causes leading up to tin 1 a-.'i'i'.k-iit remaining a mystery. The tram-car was proceeding down Ai:;::i ■ avenur iron; the Great South i road about 8.!") p.m. At the stop passed ! St. Andrew's Church the tram-car pulled : ii)i ;ci allow passengers to alight. L"aj|. iitg to get the customary signal t(. proceed, tho motormaii looked around. ;llll | found tho conductor missing. At this stage a motor-cyclist came along, and said Slater was lying on the road opposite St. Andrew's Church. Tho motorman hurried to tho scene, and found, that Slater had sustained were injuries about the head and body. He bailed a passing motor-truck, and conveyed the injured man to the hospital, but on arrival there ho was found to be dead.
The fact that Slater's body was found near the centre-pole leads to the belief that he struck it, and was thrown from the tram-car. No one witnessed the accident. Sinter was married, with two or three children, mul lived at i?> Cumberland road, Westmcro.
