GREATER TONNAGE THAN SUEZ. (BY CABLE—PJtEBB ASSOCIATION—COPMIOBT.) (AUSTRALIA* AND K.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATE)*.) PARIS, February 9. The prediction of the ill-fated Ferdinand de Lesseps that traffic through the Panama Canal would exceed 20,000,000 tous yearly, out-rivalling Suez (whereas experts reporting to liquidators estimated a maximum of 6,000,000, reached in 13 years) has prored correct. The- figures of 1926 show Panama 26.836.000, and Suex 26,060,000. [The first attempt to construct the Panama Canal, made by a syndicate headed by the French engineer, de I<esseps, ended in disaster. Five of the directors were tried and found guilty of breach of trust, while de Lesseps and his son were fined and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. The sentence was ultimately quashed. l)o Lesseps died a broken man in 1894.]
