After many days of a tropical downpour of rain, the sun shoue brightly at Rarotnnga for the Frimo Minister's (Rt. Hon. J. CJ. Contest first landing on New Zealand territory, this morning, on his return from the Imperial Conference.
After official calls by the DeputyCommissioner, Mr S. Savage, and the administrative officers, the distinguished visitors were rowed ashore in an eightoared barge, and wero enthusiastically welcomed by a large concourse of both races. Brilliant coloured hibiscus and other tropieal flowers, with patriotic flags, mado a vivid setting. Representative Arikia, Mntainpos, nud Rangatiras expressed unfeigned delight in welcoming Mr and Mrs Coates again. Replying to the addresses of welcome, Mr Coates read the King's Message acknowledging tho loynl tribute of the Rarotonga people, and expressing continued regard for them. Mr Contos expressed satisfaction at the Imperial Conference, which would enhance the unity of all Empire peoples. Briefly dealing with commercial subjects, he indicated that he was making every effort to increase Island trade, and referred to the importance of fostering tropical agricultural study in New Zealand's Pacific territories.
A motor excursion, native feast, and afternoon reception completed a delightful day. The Cook Islands' participation in the approaching Royal visit consists of three representative chiefs, who are travelling by the Mnkura. At Papeete, Mr Goates received a cordial welcome by the Governor and British Consul. Fine weather waa experienced on the voyage, and all momberg of the party are well. The Makura is due at Wellington on Monday morning.
