TO THE EDITOI OF THE PRESS. Sir.- -1 was very gratified to read in your issue of this morning, Dr. Lovinge's letter on the above (subject. His suggestions, in my opinion, arc good; and if carried into effect would further popularise this pleasure route, winch lias 'contributed so much to the p.'easure and health of the City resiuents who use it. That the City owes a debt ot gratitude to Air Jill, lor tho services Jiu Jiaii rendered in this connexion, is beyond dispute; and 1 feci sure tliat very, very many dwellers in the City of the Plains are truly grateful to him fur what lie has done tor them. 1 also am certain that tho majority of Christeliurch people conversant with the history of this road will led, witli, Dr. Lcvinge, that "it is nothing short of a scandal and a tliHgrncu on the part of the Tramway Board that pno who has done such splendid work in developing and opening up the hills for the public, to the immense benefit of the tram service, should bo seen paying his fare the same as any ordinary traveller thereby." 1 am amazed to'lcnrn tlint the Board (to whom the suggestion had been made) ha.l not the judgment to see that grntitutc and common decency demanded that Mr Ell should be grunted a free passage at all times over the entire length of this line, seeing that he has been instrumental in so materially increasing the revenue derived from it.

I think. Sir, that this matter can very Mtfel.v be left to the honourable instincts oT the public, who will seeto it that Mr Ell's valuable and lasting services shall receive public recognition, if not at the hands of the present Tramway Board, then, assuredly, nt the hands of more worthy successors.
