The death has occurred of Frederick Bickell Guthrie, tho distinguished scientist. < [Dr. Guthrie, the well-known agricultural chemist, was born in Mauritius in 1861 and educated at the University College. London. After holding important scientific positions in Britain he became Acting-Professor of Chemistry in the Sydney University. Ho has been chemist to the Department of Agriculture in Now Soujth Wales since 1892, and became lecturer in Technology at the Sydney University in 1907. His two sons died on active senvice during the war.]

Sir Wilfrid Stokes, inventor of the famous Stokes trench mortar, is dead. [Sir William Frederick Stokes hae many military inventions to his credit besides that of the trench mortar which bears his name. He was born in 1860 and educated at the Catholio University College, Kensington. He was a past president of the British Engineers' Association, and chairman of directors of Ransomes and Rapier, Ltd.]
