Magistrate's Court. At tho Magistrate's Court yostcrday, before Messrs .7. T. Norton, J.P.. »«d T. Lester, J.P.. Goorgo. Stiff, a ships fireman, appeared on romnnd on a charge of having stolen, on January 27th. n box of cigars, valued at £2 XOs, and n pair of socks valued at ss, tho property of Frank Brpar Clark. Ho was furthor charged with wilfully damaging two suitcases, vnlued at £5, by cutting them open with a knife. He pleaded guilty to both offence*. ...... ~ Sorgoant J. W. Mcllolm said that tho suitcases had been stowed in a motor-car on the steamer Maori. Stiff, who was n passenger on the steamer, hud cut them open and taken the nrtlclos mentioned. Somo shirts were also missing. Accused had been sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment in 1924 for embezzlement of cargo. Stiff pleaded that he had committed tho offences while under the influence of liquor. He had como down to Christchurch to get married. On the charge of theft he was fined £lO, In default one month's imprisonment, and ou the second charge he was ordered to pay the valuo of the suit-cases. In default 0110 month's imprisonment, the default terms to be cumulative.
