Nominations for tho Danncvirko Kaciug Club's Autumn Meeting close on Monday next. .. R. Emerson will not bo present at the Duncdin Meeting, liis stable representative, Master Clurcnco, being in chargo of W. Scobio, who will rido En fioute in his jumping engagements. The "Weekly Press" and "Ikferce," which will be on sale to-day contains reviews of all tho race meetings held throughout tho week, nnd ti summary of tho prospects of the candidates engaged on tho first day at Wingatui. The hnlf-year's statistics are embodied in its pages, also much othe» news of interest to sportsmen. Tho trotting section is repleto with items which will appeal to light harness enthusiasts, and tnero are many good pages of general reading matter. Bdllachulisk, winner of tho Maninpoto Hack Handicap at To Kuiti on Monday, is a three-year-old gelding by Kilboy fr6m Mntatauc, a Merry Moment marc, who annexed the Grout Northern Oaks in 1920 for Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P. for Hawke'a Bay. Ballachulish, who derived his name from a Scottish village, a birthplaeo of one of Mr Campbell's ancestors, was bred by, and is raeed by, the Hawko's Bay sportsman, who also bred Llandudno, winner of the To Kumi Hack Handicap on tho first day of tho same Meeting. Llandudno races in the interests of Mrs H. M. Campbell, and both horses are trained by W, Btone, who is now stationed at To Awamutu, and at one timo had his headquarters in Hastings. At the salo of the Shipley stud some years ago, Mr T. Pearcc, the well-known owner, purchased the Now Zoaland-brcd mare Battler, in foal to Comedy King. Tho maro died in tho last tc\v months, at tho ago of 28 years. She proved a bargain to Mr Pcnrce, ns she gave him Comedy Star, a dual Ballarat Cup winner, and other horses. Thoughts of Battler ore revived by the appcaranco at Flemington of two of her later progeny—ono a gelding by Gold Brow, uamed Golden Buckle, and tho other » chestnut mare by Calais that will race ns Lady Calais. Both are being trained for Mr Pearco by H. Turner, and they nro useful sorts. Rattler, who was a sister to Seahorse (Nelson —Moonga), had made a reputation at the stud in New Zealand 'before coming to Victoria, says tho "Globe," through her wellperformed representatives, Vicc-Admiral and Nautiform.

Boomerday is getting through useful tasks, and has brightened up a good deal lately. He is now without the guard over the eyo he had injured a couple of months ago, but tho sight has not returned, and it would appear that it will bo permanently impaired. It is not difficult to understand why owners of successful stallions in England rarely have any inclination to sell. Thirty or forty, thousand pounds may seem a lot for a stallion, but with some that is only n matter of three or four years' fees. For instance, it is authoritatively stated that Buchan's list is already full for 1927, 1928, nnd 1929 at a 400gns fco. Assuming 30 outsido mares nro taken each year, that means £38,300 in three years Tho statistics published show that Buchan had 33 living foals in 1925, and tho records of tho sale of yearlings that year show that 12 of his progony sold under the hammer brought tho fino avcrago of 2811gns.

I Avant-Courior, for whom Mr E. M. Pcarec gave JOOOgns as u yearling, lias been entered for the Williamstown Summer Meeting next Saturday. The colt has had only one start in public, and Melbourne racegoers have yet to see him in action. Only those who were privileged to visit Randwick on the second day of the A.J.C. Spring Meeting saw Avant-Courier race in the Breeders' Plate, won by Beckwith (says "The Globe"). In that race the record-priced youngster finished seventh, but did not get the best of the start. Avant-Courier is trained away from Melbourne, so it is hard to say whether he is ready to race at Willinmstown or not. If "started, his presence in the field will add interest to the race. Charles Maidment, the one-time famous jockey, died at Newmarket last December, at the ngc of S2. The death of Maidment severs another link with the past, for he was riding at the same period as those great horsemen, Johnny Osborne, George Fordham, Fred Archer, distance, and Tom Cuunon. During his active career in the saddle he won practically every big race of note. Ho was twice successful in the Derby, riding Mr Savillc's Crcmonip in 1872 and Mr A. Bnltazzi'B Kisbcr in 1870. In 1871 he won the One Thousand Guineas, the Oaks, and the .St. Legcr for the late Baron Meyer do Rothschild on Hannah. In the St. J.cger of JS7-' Maidment was again successful on the late Lord Wilton's Wenlock. In 1871 he won the "Woodcotc" on Cremorne, and twelve months later he won the Derby on the samo colt. Maidment was always very popular with his fellow-jockeys, and he appeared to have a penchant for Lincoln. Ho won tho Lincolnhirc Handicap on four occaions: On Indigestion in 1868, Royal Rake in 1870, Guy Dayrcll in 1872, and Vestminster in 1873.

TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for the Metropolitan T.C'.'s Summer Meeting close to-day at noon. Nominations for the Wellington T.C.'s Summer Meeting closo today at 8 p.m. with the secretary, Mr R. W. Holmes's team to race at Otahuhu is likely to include Talaro, Rcy Logan, and Bonny Logan, and they arc booked to go north on Monday. It. PollocJc is keeping Harry Audubon up to the collar, and tho ton of Clreat Audubon is looking in first-class fettle. P. Itiddlo has Parkwood and Deanwood in solid work, anil both horses aro likely to represent his stable at Otahuhu next week. After a short spell Sheik is again in work at headquarters, and ho looks in nice condition to go into strong work. F. Fox is not allowing Nelson Boy, Queen Ida, nor Garbnrdino to be idle, and tho trio are likely to assist at Kaikouru.

The much-discussed Australian-bred paeer Concliff claims three engagements on tho opening day at Otaliuhu, and in view of his great reputation his display will bo watched with interest. Inglo Bingen, who won tho Crescent Handicap at Forbury Park last month in 4.42 4-5, is nicely placed on 4.42 in tho President's Handicap at Otahuhu, nnd a strong invitation has been held out to her connexions to make tho trip.
