RECORD TAKINGS.

TRAMWAY FIGURES INCREASE. EFFECT OF WARM WEATHER. The present sustained spell of warm weather is having a beneficial effect on the returns of the Christchurch Tramway Board, and at yesterday's meeting of that body, the chairman (Mr A. 8. Taylor) made the following statement with reference to the position:— ( The revenue account for four weeks ended January 9th, 1927, shows satisfactory results.

Passengers by electric trams increased by 147,845. Passengers by the regular bus services increased oy 17,819. The earnings from t»»,»Moftw smaller sources, increased by £IBW. as compared with the same period last It is gratifying to note that all lines contributed to the advance in greater or less degree. The mileage of electric cars, consequent on the improved time-table, increased by 24,624, whilst the use of trailers dropped by 24,425 miles. The operation of electric cars is, of course, more costly than the operation of trailers, so that the increase in cost consequent on more electric cars being ran is not met by the -decrease in trailers. The increase iri\ traffic expenses is £476. Power costs under the new contract with the Government are up by £356 for tha month. On the ether hand, repairs and maintenance account, principally permanent wav and rolling stock, is less than last year by £991. The very fine and warm weather on Sunday] January 30th, resulted in a record Sunday betas: established—the takings amounting-to £782. On two other Sundays in January, and on February 6th, the receipts were over the £7OO mark. A normal Sunday ia worth between £450 and £4BO only. The observation bus continues to be well patronised, and will remain in traffic while warranted. As cas announced at last meeting, tha financial year figures to Mar'b Sltt, 1927, promise to be more satisfactory than many pennle, who were unduly nessimistic at the winter ictarns< expected.
