RURAL SCENERY.
1 HOARDING DISFIGUREMENT
With reference to complaints made in respect of the disfigurement of rural scenery by the-erection of advertising signs, the chairman of the council of the Canterbury Automobile Association (Mr B Falck) stated At last night's meeting of that organisation that ho had recently made a trip to l>unedm and had formed tho opinion that it was not only rubber and spirit concerns that were to blame in this connexion, but also companies handling other lines. Between the Waitaki bridge and Maheno, for instance, one firm had six such signs erected. There was not, h jwever. a great deal to complain of so far as the stretch of territory between Christchurch and Timaru was concerned. He was given to understand that much disfigurement had been caused on hilly country. Mt. Cargill being conspicuous for signs, also Lookout Point, near Green Island. Enquiries were being made into the whole question, and a report would be submitted to a meeting'of the South Island Motor Union. Mr F. W. Johnston said that for years the Railway Department had been lax in regard to getting new business, but now was keen for it. As a result, the Department was an offender in that it made a point of disfiguring a good deal of its property by hoardings. He hoped that when it got used to getting business it would prove moro amenable to meeting the wishes of the Association and others'who complained of such signs than it was at present.
With reference to a complaint made concerning advertisements of a certain make of car on tho Akaroa road, it was reported that the agents concerned had agreed to have the offend in signs removed.
