TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for the Rotorua Racing Club's Annual Meeting close to-day. Nominations for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Midsummer Mc?ting•:!)?-• sit 3 i>.ni. to-morrow. Acceptance for the Utahulm T.C. » Summer .Meeting clo,c on fiiday at '> I'-"'- • , LI Gav Qni-"ii !■«-. built up c-«.iisidiM-ttbl>-,l m ii.g the ~r.st mouth, and the he-u. has probably yet to bo seen o M Hum .ton'*, mare. _ She will l-c t*H" m.cu in action at lticcartpn on frclirn.ii> H).h and at the Hanks PcimiimiM gathering on March oth. Limerick was indulged in some la.-t work at Ric-arton on Mturdny, ami although not called upon to show '<"> best, ho covered five turlong.-, on tho ploiii'li conifortnhly in 1.-l -'-<>. the hr = l fia!f-mile taking ol 3-5.

c;;,- IJov, who has. not been asked to do much since the A>liburtou Mcctin", is again included in the actnc brigade at Riccartoti, and A. McAulay will have him raring at tho t.J.C. Midsummer Meeting.

Ono of tho most improved track workers at Hiccarton is Nincompoop, who has evidently derived much from his West Coast exertions. Mo was responsible for a pleasing gallop with Precious yesterday morning, and there aro not a few track-watchers who will bestow their support on the speedy Absurd geldin?;. At the Duncdin Meeting ho will be ridden by J. Campbell, who was associated with his .successes on tho West Const circuit.

In connexion with A. McAulay's appeal to tho Aslihuiton Raring Club against the stako attached to tho Moreton Hack Handicap at their recent Meeting being paid to tho owner ol Ku Route, on tho grounds that llui horso was not cligiblo to contest the event, it is worthy of mention that when Sir Clinrles Campliell was inado aware of tho full facts, ho immediately returned the cheque for tho stako to the club.

Tho North Island horseman, It. W. McTavish, who steered Peter Maxwell to victory in tho last Grand National Steeplechase, has recently lucii riding ■with much success on tho flat at North Island Meetings, and on Saturday last steered four of tho eight winners on tho first day of tho To Kuiti Meeting, bringing his total tuccesscs for tho season up to 2-1.

The Wairarapa trainer, W. Hawthorne, was a visitor to Riccarton yesterday and completed tho purchase of Mr C. G. Dalgety's tiniufmcd two-year-old filly I>y Tnurnham from Nontvillc, dam of Revel and Joyeuse. The filly will race in the interests of a patron of Hatrthorno's stable, who has- recently joined tho ranks of owners. Travelling with racehorses nowadays is a very costly business, and one of the moat expensive items is- railway carriage. For tho journey to Trentham and back an Ellerslic trainer, who took three horses for tho recent Meeting there, had to pay £7o lis Cfcl, or a cost of slightly over £23 per horse. This amount does not include fares for the horses' attendants', who are charged socoinl.cluss fare. It is, therefore, not surprising that owners and trainers aro not anxious to travel their horses long journeys unless- they hare excellent winning prospects. A horso who created a favourable impression when a yearling, but who failed in a most nronounceu manner to run up to his nigh breeding, is Romantic, the son of Romeo and Orvieta. Wlien a yearling Romantic was sold for 700gs, but when next he figured in the sale-ring, which was midway in his three-year-old career, he was allowed to go for-the small sum of 35gs. In tho interval Romantic has not been called upon to do much racing, but in what littla has been exacted from him the result has been on a par with his earlier efforts. Romantic figures among the entrants for hack events at the Wangantii Meeting, but it is for time to show whether ho can lose his maidoi. certificate.

Runnymcde. who lias as yet returned his present Australian owner iiono of tho big prico paid Mr J. S. McLcod for him, has liecn engaged in the Sydney Cnp. so apparently hopes are entertained that he will return to form.

In tho spring Rtianui was regarded as a most likely two-year-old. He won at tha first start, which was at Ellerslie, and accomplished his maiden effort in faultless style. (Some further good performances were anticipated, but his next start saw him go irtidcr to Silver Mine, whom we now know to be a smart youngster. Ruanui is to mako his next appearance, in tho two-year-old events at Wanganui this- month, and thon it will be seen whether he has mado any further improvement, Ptu-haps, like some of the Limonds, he will do better with time.
