The Council's solicitor wrote regarding tho scons being taken in connexion with iliu Green Hill paper roads and advised that the matter would conic before the Supreme Court i':i February, at Christchurch. It was agreed to request tradesmen to observe a holiday on February 25th on the occasion of "the Kaikoura '1 rottinij Club's Annual Meeting; also to vote £•) towards the entertainment ol children attending the Royal reception at Amberley. The Kaikoura agent ior s.s. ASHLEY. The Ashley County Council met at Loburn on Thursday last. Present: — Crs. I. P. M. O'llalloran (chairman), Bennett, Hutchison, I'litlpott, and Pulley. Mr Hutchison reported on, the last meeting of the Auibcrlcy Reception Committee, stating that euitablo arrangements were in train. A contribution of £ls was authorised. Mr Pulley reported on . tho Makerikeri Torrace road, and it was decided to hold the matter over until winter. - Regulations under the Health Act were considered, but as little was found to apply to the County, no action was taken. 'The. Inspector'notified'that an early liouscto-house inspection of the County would be made. The condition of the'highway was fully discussed, and it was considered ■ to • be practically ready for inspection by the District Engineer. The Christchurcli City Council wrote with regard to suitable reserves for plantation, and a statement was authorised. . The Rangiora High School Board wrote asking for a representative on the Advisory Board, and Mr Hutchison was asked to act. On application from Mr A. M. Miller a grant of £4 was mado towards the clearing of the fords of tho Eastern Grey river. The Council approved of the proposal to ask the Oxford Council to construct a short line of concrete blocks to protect tho south end of the ford over tho Ashley at Glcntui. It was decided, that the ten per cent, addition to rates, and tho increase on tho dog-collar fee should be made on Wednesday March 23rd next, and that this should be publicly advertised. . WOODEND. The annual meeting of the Woodcnd District School Old Scholars' Association was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday evening. Mr W. Stalker presided over a good attendance ol members. He referred to the death of Mrs S. Smith, the only member the Association had lost duriu 2 the year. A motion of sympathy as carried to Mr Smith and all members of the family, and also to Mr and Mrs IX Morris, who had lost a daughter through an accident. Hay was chairman, and Colonel Loach and M r Denniston, of the Canterbury A. and P. Association, were present, explaining the object of raising tho funds and giving a summary of the proposed programme of the Military Tattoo to be held early in March. Tt was finally decided to support tho candidature of Miss*' Marewa Parkinson, and in the event of another candidate being nominated, Messrs E. Hay and T. Masefield were appointed delegates to attend a meeting if necessary to map out a plan of campaign. On Friday ovenins; a dance was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, with the object of raising funds to assist the War Memorial Committee to complete the fence nronwl the Memorial prountls. The "Surprise'' Jazz Rand supplied spirited music for dancing. The Memorial Committee will benefit to the extent of about .£2.3 as a result.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON Hornby has now the advantage of having a moving-picture show once a week in the Orange Hall. Mr W. Aitken. of Little River, commenced on February 3rd with a splendid houso, the hall being too small to seat the large number present. A good programme, and music supplied hy Messrs Bainbridge and Mcßryde, made a most enjoyable evening.
