PERSONAL. (srzruL to thb press.) GKEYMOUTH, February 6. Mr W. P. Montcith (Reefton), accompanied by his mother, Mrs S. Montcith, is visiting Christchurch. Miss Pratt (Cowper street) returned yesterday from Wellington and Christchurch Mr and Mrs P. Tiuck arrived /rem Christchurch yesterday. They are the guests of Mrs E. Moss (Wiunic street). Mr and Mrs R. Smith, who have been on a brief visit to Wellington, returned yesterday afternoon. They were accompanied by Mr and Mrs H. Palethorpc who arrived from England last week. Miss McKee, travelling secretary of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, arrived from Christchurch yesterday. The Ucv. A. .7. Seamer, General Superintendent of the Methodist Home and Maori Missions, and the Rev. Wharehuia Raugthcua, of the Hot, Lakes district, arc the guests of the Rev. J. F. and Mrs Martin. Mr Fred Keating, of Keefton, has been appointed judge of the horse section at the. Duller A. and P. Show. Mr James Kennedy, Municipal gas manager at Groymouth, left yesterday for Wellington. Mr If. G. Carter (Kamaka) has returned from Wellington. The Rev. Father Fogarty, formerly in charge of tho Ahaura Parish, who left some months ago for England and America on a recuperative trip, will return to the Dominion at the end of this month. Mrs A. T. Dowcll will leave to-mor-row for Lyttclton, where sho will reside for a few months. Mr D. McDonald left ycstcTday for Hastings, whero ho has accepted an appointment on tho State School teaching staff. Mr 11. Wickcn, of Reefton, left for Christchurch yesterday. The marriage took place at Nelson recently, of Mr Alexander Douglas Shepherd, youngest son of Mr ::nd the lale Mrs G. P>. Shepherd, ftullvr road, Reefton, and Miss llcrniiona Edith Paytnuity of Victoria Crescent, Port Nelson. The Rev. J. McNeill, of Unity Presbyterian Church, performed the ceremony.

Mr E. 11. Muncustcr is to take over the Lyell School in jilaca of Mr V. Liddicoat, who has been transferred to Millcrtou, and Mr C. Peck, who last year was in charge of the Mauglts Valley School, has accepted an appointment in the Feilding District. While bathing near the South tiphoad on Friday evening, a young man named Frank F. Rutherford got into 'difficulties near the rocks, but finally managed to regain tho beach. A number of other surf bathers brought a life-sav-ing reel to tho scene, but it was not required. Whilo bathing with sovcral companions at Cobden this morning, a girl named Mollie into difficulties. Her brought to her rescuo a youth named William Gunn, who swam to hdr assistance, and after considerable difficulty brought her safely to tho bank.

Big Claim over Fatal Accidont. At the Brown's Creek-sawmill, near Inangahua Landing, a few months ago, Peter Carmody, a widower, with several dependants, met his death. A claim for £4,000 will probably be heard at the next civil sitting of the Supreme Court in Groymouth. The plaintiff is the Public Trustee,' and the defend nuts Messrs liiggins and Fawcett Bros., sawmillcrs, of Brown's Creek. Unemployment. In response to representations from Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., and tho Grey County Council, in connexion with finding work for a number of men unemployed, owing to the closing down of sovcrnl sawmills, the Under-Secretary for tho Public Works Department has advised the County chairman (Mr D. Baybutt) that the expenditure of £570 and £764 has been authorised for the two roads in the district, and tho Minister for Public Works would be pleased if the Council could see its way to offer work to tho unemployed with those grants. .The County chairman has replied stating that a start will be made immediately with both roads. Dnnollie Fatality. An inquest concerning the death of Mr Jesse Baddeley, who was killed through falling from a viaduct near Dunollie on Friday, was opened at Dunollio yesterday morning, and was adjourned until Monday afternoon. The funeral took place this afternoon when there was a large nttendance of mourners, tho cortege arriving at Karoro from Runanga by special train. The service at the graveside was conducted by tho Bev. J. F. Martin, of St. Paul's Methodist Church.

Coastal Eoad. Mr W. Jeffries, Westland County chairman, wired last week to the Act-ing-Prime Minister, urging special attention to the completion of the Coast road linking Westport and Greymouth. A reply has been received stating that the representations made have been noted for consideration. At tho moeting of the Westland County Council, to bo held on Tuesday next, tho chairman will move that the fullest support be accorded the request for the completion of tho Coast road linking tho Westport and Greymouth centres, and that the Council authorise representation at any joint conference of local bodies convened to urgo the matter specially on the attention of the Government, with a view to expediting tho speedy completion of the important road connexion in question. Summer Sickness. An epidemic described as "summer sickness" is prevalent among a large proportion of the population, and in some cases medical aid has been sought. The sickness, which is accompanied by colic and severe headache, has so far been only of short duration, and has left no serious after effects. Bowling. Yesterday's express brought a number of bowling enthusiasts to compete in the annual tournament of the West Coast Centre, which will be held this week on the Bunanga and Greymouth Club's greens, commencing at 8 a.m. with rinks play. Three, rounds will be played each day, and the pairs will start, on Wednesday. The finals are expected to be concluded by Friday. Complete arrangements have been made for the comfort of the competitors and provided the weather is favourable the tournament should be successful and enjoyable.
