AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.

WORK OF COUNCIL.

CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT

ITHE PRESS Special Scrrice.J

WELLINGTON. February 4

Having inspected the isitc of the New Zealand" Agricultural College, near i'aluicrston .sorth, the council wind) will control it returned to Wellington and spent another uay mscusuug plans, the meeting concluded with mo adoption ot a report to the Government lurinuiating a scheme lo r its consideration, as fciierever expenditure is involved it must receive the sanction ot Cabinet. . •Hie Council has completed its nrsi sitting and i consider it lias made very satislactory progress," remarked tho Hon. Mr Fowlds, chairman ot tno Council, in an interview, "llio procress is all the more satisfactory when one considers that the members bold widely different views regarding the nature of tho work to be done, and the best method of doing it. While the organisation of an agricultural college cannot be effected in a day, I think wo have made definite progress considering the limitations which are necssary to keep faith with tho statement made to Parliament by the Prime Minister last session. Conferences have # been held between the Council, the chairman of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and officers of the Department of Agriculture. Thcso have been exceedingly valuable in ascertaining difficulties to be overcome in order to get the best results with a minimum of overlapping. The spirit manifested on all sides in tlicso discussions was everything one could desire, and we have every confidence in the maintenance of that spirit. "A similar conference will be necessary and we hope will be arranged bv the Government, with the Governors of Lincoln College, at which the three parties concerned in this question—the Agricultural College Council, the Lincoln College Governors, and the Government—will ho represented. "In the meantime wo have collected •» mass of information nnd data on the question, and T intend to go through it very carefully, and then issue through the Press a statement which I think will fully reflect the views of the Council in this very important subject."
