HE TRUSTEES of tho PORT HJLLB- - ROAD PUBLIC TRUST ask for the assistant* ef the pub,llc in putting the flnaneaa on a sound bull. The TRUST hat been formed to carry on and enlarge the work begun by tho intlring and devoted efforts of Mr H. G. EU, for whom the responsibility has bow become too great. The Government .has agreed to transfer to the care of the Trust the roadside bouses, including the Sign of tho Kiwi, and tho reserves at Dyet'a Pass, Kennedy's Bush, Cooper's Knob, and Kaltuna: "The Sign of the Takahe," with Cracroft Hill, is the property, of the Trunt. Its affairs Will be administered on sonnd business lines, and account* will be submitted to Government audit The work to b* first considered is the completion of the /'Sign of the Takahe," at the tram terminal, which i* at present in an unfinished state, even lacking a proper roof, while no provision baa yet Dean mad* for adequate drainage. The building has been most artistically diaigned, and studs on Cracroft BUI, a Reserve of some seven acres, obtained through the generosity of a number of Ohrlstcburch cltisens, who voluntarily subscribed approximately £IOOO towards its cost; bat there still exists on the building and .reserve a mortgage of £4OOO. This Reserve, it funds ware available, might be made one of the beauty spot* ol the Chrlstchureh district. Already something has been done for the- comfort and convenience of visitors; seats having been placed in sheltered spots, from which a magnificent view may ho had of the Canterbury Plains and the distant snow-clad mountains. Cracroft Hill Is the Reservii in which the public is most interested, being easy of access by both young and old, and for this reason tha Trnstees have decided to take In band without delay the work necessary for completing the "Sign of the Takabe," from which a largely increased revenue mar then be expected, enabling the Trnstees gradually to liquidate the mortgage. For this work a sum of about £3OOO will be required:— The Trustees recognise that they have an uphill task to face In carrying on with inadequate financial support, for while the pub41c In steadily increasing number* avail themselves of the facilities provided, they do not seem to realise that money is badly needed to continue operation*. The Trustees earnestly ask for help from the public Subscription!, however small, will be gratefully received by the "Press" Office, or by the following members of tha Trust: — Colonel Stadbolme, Middleten Orange, Upper Riccarton.W.
