To make romance and entertainment out of solid facts as recorded In the history bookl is not (0 difficult «« ft sound*, and this has been skilfully accomplished In "The Beautiful Rebel," the dramatic romance d« luxe which is to be presented at tho Crystal Palace Theatre next week, in which Marlon Datiea playa the title role. Althongh a comedienne and an artist of marked charms and abilities, Miss DaTies Is always at her beat In eostumo plays, of which "The Beautiful Rebel" in a magnincent example. She comports herself with a Race and ad ease that are wholly delightful, and instill some dashing and vibrantly all** »e*lng Into her part. The atory U in original on* from a will-known novelist's pen, and tells a thrilling and pleasantly human atory of the early days of the War of Independence, wherein figure mbst of the famous personages of that time, General Burgoyne himself playing a leading part In the plot of the drama. In parts, the picture bears the Imprint of positively inspired direction, notably the crossing Of tha froien Delaware Biver by Washington* Artny; this it • scene which leaves an indellble Impression upon the memory. The tattle scenes show all the thrills of war without lis attendant horrors, and the charmlug atory is fraught with a Strong drlmatlo interest and a wayward type of romance whieh make "The Beautiful Rebel" an altogether memorable picture. Tha tfiolure Is remarkable for Its magnificence and brilliance, seme sequences in the French court at Versailles lending a gorgeous tone to the film. The performance tendered by Marlon Davles ranks among the finest she nssi yet given the screen. The character Is full of delightful inconsistencies, and the star is always vWeeleus and alluring. Heading the long and distinguished east, notable for the dignified names appearing therein, ii Harrison Ford, who plsys a dashing part with vigour and effect. The second picture is "Love's Whirlpool," a melodramatic Story Of the underworld starring Llla Lee and James Klrkwood. This romance bears the mark of striking originality. Its theme is human and thrilling, and a pleasing balance of comedy shows off to advantage the deep dramatic interest of the film. Lile, Lee Is a sterling actress, and her work in this picture is of the highest order, while James Klrkwood appears in a role totally different from any of his others. The Crystal Palace Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Mr Alfred Bunt, will play a programme of incidental music, including the following numbers: Overture, "Light Ctvelry" (Suppe); symphony, "Tha Unfinished" (fiohtibert); "Madame Butterfly" (Puccini), "Hans de Joueur de flute" (Qanne). "Soul of the Katlon" (Halm), "Voice of the Bells" fThruban). "Waiting" (Anollffe), "Don't Have Any More" (Castling), "Brlc-a-Brae" (Monckton). "Hymn a Balnte Cecils" (Oonnod).
