LAWN TENNIS.
TRIAL MATCHES. WILDING SHIELD PLAYERS. The first of a scriss of I rial matches between the eight players selected by tho Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association to practise tor inclusion in the Canterbury team against Wellington in (lie Wilding Shield competition was held at Wilding lark last evening. Voiir single? ami two doublet matches were, ployed, and although only three games were decided, tho form generally provided ampin proof, that if Canterbury 13 lo retain tho Wilding Shield, the team will liavo to bo chosen without delay, in order that the men can obtain consistent practice !n doubles. The courts were in better condition than was the case during the provincial championships, but tho turf was still epongy, and was not by any means conducive to high-class tennis. Tho surpriso ot the evening was the defeat of I. A. Scav by 1». G. Greenwood, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. Scny certainly has played many better games,"but in the second and third sets he was outplayed completely. Greenwood pivo a good all-round exhibition, and at times lie showed glimpses of his old form. Geoff. Ollivier won in sets from K. J. Walker, and although tho second session went to 11 games, ho had perfect control, and ran out at S-b\ Walker took two games in tho first set, in which Ollivier played with uncanny occura;;. - . The tennis in tho remaining matches was disappointing, and, candidly speaking, if thcro is not a great improvement in tho form generally, Canterbury will lose tho shield. The scorc3 were as follow:
Ollivier beat Walker, 6-2, 8-(i; Loughnan v. Angas, 8-S (match abandoned); Greenwood beat Jseay, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2; Glanville beat Patterson, 6-2, 6-1.
