RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
FIGURES FOR JANUARY. TCo very marked variation is apparent in the railway figures for the district for January, 1920, and January, 1927, but the number of sheep carried showed nn increase, duo to tho absenco of industrial trouble in the freezing works this year.
But for the very heavy passenger traffic on January 3rd, 1927 would havo come off badly in a comparison with 1926 in this item, for in January of last year tho Duuedin Exhibition was responsible for abnormal bookings. The figures for timber reflect the present slump in that industry, while those for cattle show a decrease through market fluctuation. Through a fallingoff in shipping over part of the period and in the output o£ tho West Coast mines, tho tonnage under the heading "other goods" shows a substantial decrease. The period covered bv the figures for 1927 is the four weeks ended January 29th, and tho following comparison is with the corresponding period of 1920:
1927. 1020. Passenger bookings 177,140 179,367 Season tickets 4,210 •1,185 Cattle 3,506 3,898 Sheep and pigs 223,So6 20n,C61 Timber, tons 8,512 10,159 Other goods, tons .. 81,490 92,279
