RAILWAY DEPARTMENT CRITICISED. "FLEECING THE PUBLIC." Some strong criticism wu aimed at the Railway Department last evening by members of the Canterbury Yachting Association, who met to diuousa the Sanders Cup contest. It wns reported that a deputation had asked the railway officials at Christchurch to grant a. concession on the extra faros for tho travelling public during tho week of the contest. Tho reply was that an extra 3d wou 1.1 be placed on the Ist class fares, and an extra Sd on the second class fares. Tho extra charges would then be rebated as a donation to the Association, less 4) per cent, for a collecting fee. litis arrangement to operate for the two Saturdays. "Wo will put pounds into the pockets of tlia railway people, and ytt they propose to fleece the ptiolio and thus pive us a donation," siiid Mr F. B. Sutton, expressing dingust. Smith: In the old regatta days the railway people" computed the numbers likely to travel, and then gave us a rebate. No nctinn was decided! on. At its meeting yesterday the Lyttelton Harbour Board made a prant of £25 towards the funds of the Sanders Cup Entertainment Committee.
