ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho first meeting since the New Year of the Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr R. Galbralth), and Councillors F. Z. D. Ferriman, R. M. Dunlop, W. H. Woods, J. Watson, W. G. Hillier, J. Donn, W. H. Robinson, R. A. Oollinß, and R. Kerr. ~"/,. The Medical Officer of Health for Canterbury (Dr. T. F. Telford) wrote stating that at a recent date a case of plague was re J ported at Liverpool, and as boats touched this Dominion frequently from that port, there was a possibility of plague reaching New Zealand. Therefore it was desirable that the Council take satisfactory measures to reduce the number of rats by poisoning or trapping. It was also requested that the Council keep a limited stock of ratj poison on hand to be available as occasion arose.. The Council received a quote for.the installation of an up-to-date fire-alarm system in Ashburton.

The matter was referred to the Fire Brigade Committee for report. The Waltham School Committee was granted permission to hold its annual picnic in the Domain on February 3rd.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board wrote thanking the Council for the offer of the Domain for its annual picnic on January 26th, stating that about 450 adults and children would attend.

A resolution of sympathy was passed with Councillor Kerr in the loss of his father.' The financial statement showed'that since the last meeting the receipts, including rates for 1926-27 £2904 8s lid, amounted to £3357 lis.

The Mayor was appointed the Council's representative at the Municipal Associations' Conference to be held at Palmerston North on February 9th. • Councillor Ferriman's notice of motion to rescind a. previous resolution removing the carriers' stand was held over until a full meeting of the Council.

The Kaiapoi Woollen Co. was granted permission to hold its annual picnic in the Domain on February 12th.
