v SERIOUS OUTLOOK

POSITION AT AUCKLAND. [THE PRESS BpeeUl Bervlco.] AUCKLAND, January 17. During previous years there has always been a lull in the relief fiiven by the Hospital Board during t the month of January, but this year so far has proved an-exception to the general rule. At the first meeting held this year to administer relief one of the biggest lists ever presented for consideration was gone through entailing an amount of work not usually anticipated by members just after the holiday period. A very large percentage ot cases was caused through unemployment, and the opinion was expressed by the Chairman of the Board that he had never seen anything like, it since he had been connected with relief work. "It is. not the loafer class we have had before us," he added, "but a good type of workman who is up against it and quite unable to get work. The position,of unemployment is undoubtedly serious, and if it is bad now, what will it be during the, winter months when things will be much slacker than now?" :'

Unemployment in Auckland showed an increase last week, the list increasing to 540 at the week-end compared with 381 for the seven days previously.
