GENERAL STRIKE.

FORTHCOMING INQUEST. ACTIONS OF UNION CONGRESS. (BY CABLE— PKE S3 ASSOCIATIOK—COFYMOHT.I (AUSTRALIA* Aim X.2. CABLE ASSOCIATIOK.) LONDON, January 15. The report of the Council of the Trade Union Congress for the longdeferred inquest on the general strike, which will take the shape of a special conference of executives affiliated to the union on January 20th has been issued to delegates as a confidential document, to be published on the day of the conference. It is believed that it consists of two sections. The first summarises the mining dispute and the course of events to the termination of the general strike, and explains the Trade Union Council's motive in calling off the general strike. It repudiates certain statements iu the last-mentioned connexion. The second section deals with the subsequent events to the end of November, including the Trade Union Congress's mediation efforts, and comments outspokenly on the mining dispute and defends the Trade Union Congress attitude towards it.

" BREACH OF CONFIDENCE.''

LABOUR PAPER ATTACKED

(AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

LONDON, January 16. A Labour newspaper's "breach of confidence" incurred severe reproof from the Trade Union Congress, which has issued a statement that misunderstanding was caused by the premature publication of a portion of the Trade Union Congress report circulated to conference delegates and also to the newspapers, with a request not to publish it before the meeting of the conference on January 20th. The statement says that confidence was violated not by capitalist newspapers, but by a journal claiming to be exclusively a trade union and Labour paper, namely, the "Sunday Worker," which erroneously described the report as a "secret document." The Council adds: "The premature publication is calculated to prejudice the minds of delegates, and reflects discredit on Labour journalism."

It appeals to the Press not to make this dishonourable action an excuse for publishing the renort before the appointed date.
