SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. The Wellington Bacing Club's Summer Meeting, which Commences on Thursday, is creating interest from one end of the Dominion to tho other, and with the added attraction of the inauguration of the JNTew Zealand yearling sales, there is sure to be a record crowd in Wellington for the racing carnival. Principal interest centres in the race for the Wellington Cup, which will be contested by the best class horses in thejDominion. At present both Rapino and/Star Stranger represent Mr A. B. Williams's interests, but it is possible that only one of them will face the starter. Tc Monanul is the ruling favourite, and as he seems to race Well on tho Trentham track, he is expected to bent /most of the top weights. Bapier'7-8 Fresco 7-0 aro two Riccarton representatives Ohgaged in the Wellington Cup at reasonable weights, and they are expected to improve upon their recent showings. Both compoted at the Manawatu Meeting without any pronounced success, but in tho Marton Cup Rapier proved himself a good one. With tho sting out of the ground ho may be the best of the Riccartotr representatives. Count Cavour, with 9-13, will have mnhy followers in his Wellington en-gageinc-nt, but the weight ho is asked to carry is such that only a greut performer could bo expected to succeed under. 'He is well, and may prove himself better than most people think ho is.

Footfall, since his successful trip to Auckland, has done everything asked Of him, and may bo expected to seo out every yard of the mile and a half journey. Other Riccarton representatives engaged include Oriflamb in the Trentham High-Weight Handicap, who was successful at the West Coast holiday Meetings; Centrepiece, who appears to have a fair chance in the Anniversary Handicap; Paperchase, a winner at Auckland, who will contest the Telegraph Handicap; Gold Mint, Brightling, Frivolous, and Dark Spot, in the Ruapchu Handicap and Assurance in the Apprentices' Plate. Altogether Riccarton stables are Strongly represented, besides which the South Island will also have running Corn Money, Rosenor, and Comic Song from southern 'stablos. Already several Eiccattoli-trained horses have arrived at Trentham, these including Sir Geo. Clifford's team, consisting of Centrepiece, Front Rank, Dark Spot, Scrambler, and Sudden Storm, who went north on Saturday night in H. Cutts's care. • Mr C. G. Dalgety's Footfall and Paperchase, accompanied the Chokebore Lodge string. '

Saggi"tarius,,one of A. McAulay's charges, will probably be a competitor at Trentham on the second and third days of tho Meeting.

E. Emerson will not go to Wellington, but one of his charges in Assurance will bo sent north, W. Scobie being in charge. G. J. Pine left last night with Crossbow, Silver Coot, and Don Jose, and these that will go north to-night include, T. H, Gillett with Count Cavour, H. Nurse with Rapier, F. Christmas with Fresco and Onflanib, A. E. Wormald with Frivolous, J. W. Jennings with Booster, and J. Lindsay with Gold Mint, besides Heisler, who raced well on the West Coast, and has been at Riccarton for the past week. C. Eastwood will ride Fresco in the Wellington Cup, and A.
