THRIFT.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE FRESB. Sir, —It is a good* job for Mr Moscovitch that when he got married and had two children and lived on £3 per week that he and his wife and family did not reside in New Zealand. I am in receipt of £o.per week, and find it hard to get along on that. Things must be cheap in Russia, or Mr Moscovitch must have had little to eat and drink, and I am sure had he not been aa actor ho would never have seen a play. I, enclose a list of my weekly expenses for three people, and I defy Mr Moscovitch or anyone else to live cheaper here in Christchurch. You will see I never, go to the pictures, and have of necessity to be a teetotaller. —Yours, etc., ' . H.A. TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. gi r> We have in Christchurch a number of noisy people never tired ot proclaiming their love for the Empire and their loathing for what they are pleased to call the ."accursed dole," as though tlie so-called dole were simply a charitable fund from which lazy people can help themselves ad lib. A prominent English business man visitin? the Dominion recently, pointed out that the so-called dole really represents the thrift of the workers themselves and has been subscribed at least in part by means of the unemployment insurance scheme, which takes a portion of each week's pay to make provision for a rainy day. Surely this is more honourable than some methods employed in New Zealand such as engineering a' seat in the Upper House end drawing a pension for doing nothing. The army of retired civil servants in New Zealand will soon provide a problenv-whieh will keep us busv without slandering those in England who have at least tried to make honest provision for themselves.—Yours etc CITIZEN."'
