SPORTING.

FURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for tho Pahiatua Racing Club's Annual Meeting close -oday. , There will bo racing this week at Trentham, Foston, Wairoa, and 13ay «< Islands. 'The aged gelding Kilkcc, by hilbroney from latchet, fell in the Aparima Steeplechase at Wairoa on Saturday and succumbed to his injuries.

S. Henderson, who rcxlo Tanadces to victory in tho Auckland Cup, will be on him again at Trentham, and he will also ride Tannadice. Sweet Melody, who has done a lot of racing this season, has been eased up since she raced at Waikouaiti on New Year's Day, and is to be given a spell. She has been quite a good stake-winner for Mr Noilson during tho past three months. The owner of Arrowsmith, Mr H. W Brown, was recently; approached to name a price at which ho .would sell tho English-bred horse, but he declined the overture. Arrowsmith has sired a few winners and several of his progeny are viewed in a promising light. The late King Edward's racing cost him practically nothing, l'rom U*W> to 1010 he was fortunate enough to ■win £146,000 in stakes alone, his most profitable year being 1800, when orcjr £3l 000 was credited to tho account of the Royal owner. At the commencement of his turf ventures he handed a. cheque for £IOOO to his manager, Lord Marcus Beresford, to open an account with Messrs We&therby. He was never called upon for another penny, and at one time nearly £60,000 stood to his credit.

An interesting entry for tbe sprint •vents at Wellington is that of Bennora. A very high opinion is held of this Bisogne geldmg, and although ho Stas won only one open sprint in a fivehorse race at Hawera last May. he showed distinct promise last season, when his record was six wins, four seconds, and two thirda in 17 starts. This is good enough to go on with, but from all accounts Benzora is expected to do tatter this year. Ho was given a run at New Plymouth during tho holidays, but he was not seen out at Stratford,. .so his appearance at Trcntham will be awaited with interest. He may not be a rod in pickle for the open sprints there, for the opposition is going to be irerjr -rioh., Pantler is the latest addition to the Yohooling list. While Pantler is anything hut a model of decorum at t)ic barrier, there appear to be one -or two horses who should also, be sharing Pontler's doubtful honour.

The death is reported at Invercargill of Mr t>. G. Hoope, a retired bank manager and brewer, and also one of the foundation members and a trustee of the. Southland Racing Club. Mr Pavid Jolly, a. member of the executive of the Cromwell Jockey Club, . and Mayor of the town, intends removing to Dunedin shortly. For many years he acted as starter for the CromWfU Jockov Club, and has been a very active worker in its interests. In more ways than one Mr Jolly will be missed , when he leaves Cromwell.

ASHBURTON R.C. A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The Ashburton Racing Clnb experienced delightful -weather lor its Summer Meeting 'held on Saturday, but even the perfect weather had its disadvantages, for it kept in the harvest fields many who would otherwise hire been present. The crowd was not a one, and this was an unfortunate feature of the Meeting which provided some interesting racing and several most exciting finishes. In the capable hands of Mr A. J. Ni'coll, detail arrangements were well in hand, and the honorary stewards carried out their duties in a manner to be commended. The track provided very fast going, and the times registered were such as might be expected in important races on metropolitan courses. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £10,642. Following were the results: — HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 115 sovs; second 10, third S. lm. 6. T. L. Turley's b g CORN RIGS by Markhope —Helianthes aged 10-13 R. McSeveney 1 1. H. From the start Finora at once hit the front, while Grey Lass lost ground. Finora had six lengths lead coming into the straight, and was never headed, winning very easily by that distance from Goldtown, who was a length in front of Corn Rigs. Time, 1.13. Winner bred by A. F. Laurie, and trained by owner. NOTES ON THE RACING. Watcrlow and Gay Queen declined engagements made in the High-Weight Handicap, Sbandre being made a good favourite. Corn Itige, as usual, hopped out in front, and led ail the way, though at the finish he was being hurried along to stall off the atten- , lions of Shandre, who was badly placed all through tho race, and wae only prominent in the latter stages. With better luck in the running it eceins he must have won. Goldtown and Prophet's Mark in tho early stages were prominent, but the pressure found them out at the finish. Master John has distinct possibilities, and will bo heard of agaHn. The dividend was handsome. Thorndalo, Gold Mint, and Brightling were the popular fancies in the Winchmore Hack Handicap, but again backers were astray, and Moratorium, after being well ridden by C. Eastwood, camo with an undeniable rush at tho finish to easily silence the attentions of Gold Mint. The winner in turn waa called on to do hia best to stavo off a challenge by Calcilo, an English-bred filly in F. D. Jones's stable, who was putting in great work at the finish. This filly is most promising, and will probably be better served when tho distances are further than tho Bevcn furlongs ehe raced over on this occasion. Coch-y-Bondhu, like Gold Mint, had every chance, but faded at the end. Thorndalo was never prominent, and Brightling and Princesß Mafnlda failed tx> run on. There were some very promising young pneere harnessed up for the Melro»e Trot Handicap, and a most interesting race resulted. At one stage it looked as though Miss Dorothy and Amazon would have tho finish to themselves, and it was only in the last few strides that Miss Dorothy was beaten. Half a mile from home Ayr was I with the leaders, and it seemed that ehe must win. Bonnie Prince, a good-looking three-year-old colt by Haroid Dillon from Princess Perfection, lost a lot of ground in the early part, but put in u most convincing ran in the straight, just failing to get up. It was a most exciting finish, and only the judge could give the correct placings. Handicapped on 3.42, Amazon was called on to improvo considerably on that time. Another great finish resulted in the Tinwald Handicap, and at the end only short margins separated the placed horses. The honours reßted with Margaret Birney, who was responsible for tho fast pace set, and at the finish succumbed by only a neck to Gay Queeu, who, handily placed for most of tho journey, lost her position at the turn into the straight, and was then lucky enough to get a clear run on the rails. It lfcas another stirring finish, and had the public wildly excited. Again only the judge could tell the victor. The unlucky one of tho race was Courtly Bose, who got a very bad start and finished a good fourth. Her turn will come. Tiff ran a very poor race, and was last for most of the journey. Eoyal Tractor, a well-grown.three year-old, made the opposition look cheap over the final stages of the Lagmhor Plate, and, though kicked up to hie work, he still bad a good bit to come and go on at/the finish. It seemed, however, that the others represented* a very moderate lot, and the best, perhaps, may be Tripaway, who lost ground at the start, and showed great speed in the middle stages. Money Mart showed speed, and may turn out useful. Gay Sonnet was badly ridden in the Moreton Hack Handicap, for, after losing ground at the start, she was rushed through the field, and in less than two furlongs was setting the pace with Violet 11. These tactics had their effect, for when En Route made his challenge Gay Sonnet was' done with. Gay Sonnet i 3 more than useful, and will win races. En Route's finishing effort was a good one, and he was patiently handled by J. Boale. Sir Boy put in a good finishing run, and is evidently a useful sort. Violet 11. showed form for four furlongs, when her conditidn gave- out. Motor Smash went a bad race, and does' not appear to be much good. Tho Selma Trot Handicap, which promised to provide an excellent finish, was completely spoiled by a smash in the straight. Locanda's Geuoral, when running , prominently, fell, and Ashley Dillon; Amazon, and Surfboard came down, and- many of the following horses were badly interfered with. This left Lyonwood well clear, and ho won easilv. Drake and Locanda Maid fought out a desperate finish for second place, but had no chance of catching tho leader. The Wakanui Handicap was a one-horse race, for at the start Finora hopped out in front and never left the issue in doirb.t. It was a hollow victory, and the remainder could not foot it with the brilliant Finland mare. The time showed the fast nature of the track.
