THE WORKLESS.
SATURDAY'S REGISTRATIONS. EX-SOLDIERS AFFECTED. Six men registered as unemployed at the office of the Labour Department on Saturday. Three were married, with U dependents. The officer in charge was unable to place any men during the morning, and no Public Works employment was offering. At i.30 this morning the unemployed who are to receive a week's work irom the Citizens' Unemployment Committee will report at the Chester street depot. Thirty with dependents have been notified to attend. Mr J. Young (Curator of the Domains) and one of the City Council's foreman will arrange for hatches to work on several of the reserves owned by the Council in the City. Although fifteen returned soldiers registered as unemployed last week at the office of the Returned Soldiers' Association, the secretarv expressed the opinion that this was not the full number out of work. He had been able to place three in temporary employment. Co-operation among neighbouring farmers in harvesting was reducing the amount of wage labour needed for rural work this year. Tie official expressed a hope that all workless exsoldiers would advise him of their position, so that the Association would be in a position to give exact particulars in any representations which might be made to the Government.
The building trade has suffered adverse effects from the British coal strike, which has prevented the companies concerned at Home from fulfilling orders for structural ironwork. As a result, local contractors have been, and are being held up, and about twenty carpenters arc said to be out of work.
