LAWN TENNIS.

TEST MATCH. i WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND. J (MESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January 16. New Zealand won the tennis Test easily by 18 matches to 3. Saturday's results: — SINGLES. E. D. Andrews beat N. Peach 2-G, 7-5, 6-2. 0. Ollivier beat A. L. North 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. N. Wilson beat J. Fitzgerald 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. 1). Ci. France beat J. SI. McCausland 8-10, 6-2, 6-1. N. G. Sturt beat C. Brewster, 6-1, 6-0. L. G. Knott beat F. Peach, 6-1, 0-3. DOUBLES. Ollivier and Wilson beat Peach and Peach 6-2, U-2. Ollivier and Wilson beat Fitzgerald and Brewster 0-2, 0-3. Andrews and France beat North and McCausland 8-6, 6-8, 6-4. Andrews and Franco beat Peach and Peach 7-5, 5-7, 11-12. Knott and Sturt lost to North and McCausland 6-4, 2-6, 3-6. In the first match of the morning, G. Ollivier defeated Dr. A. L. North 5-7, 6-2, 6-Q. As a master of courtcraft, the Canterbury representative has no equal in this country, and at all times ho had control of the game. North played brilliantly in the first set, but tired in the second and third Bets, and did not even extend Ollivier, who was placing with great accuracy. Both played a coriier-to-corner game, but North was unable to got to the net, as Ollivier was too accurate with passing shots across the court. The Australian took the first set by good all-round play, but he could make no headway in the remaining sets, in which be won only four games. The star attraction of the day was the meeting of E. D. Andrews and Norman Peach, which wa s won by the former, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, after a good exhibition of solid driving. There were very few brilliant shots, and of those that did come off Andrews won a fair proportion. The Australian failed to reproduce his form of the previous day. His forehand was inconsistent, and not once did he reproduce tho speed that enabled him to overwhelm Ollivier on the previous day. He was very uncertain with his backhand returns of deep drives. The New Zealander woe very erratic in the first s et, but steadied up in the second, and outdrove Peach in tho third Bession. Play in tho opening stages of the first set was very mediocre, and Andrews did not appear at all happy, being unablo to strike his length, while Peach was content to keep the hall in play. The Australian took the set 6-2, but, with one exception, his drives lacked pace, and had nothing like the speed of the previous day. Andrews showed to better advantage in the second set, and, in spite of frequent errors, he quickly ran into a 8-1 lead. Peach, however, directing hia drives to his opponent s feet, evened at 3-alI. Fighting grimly, Andrews took the odd game by solid driving from the back court, playing long and short shots down the centre court. Peach brought the score to 4-all, but the Now Zealander again led at 5-4. The Australian was not to be denied, and, speeding up the game, ho levelled the score at 5-5.. Andrews, however, rose to the occasion, and by spectacular play ran out at 7-5. Play in the final set was solid rather than bplliant. Both drove deep to the base-line, Andrews improving as the set progressed. Peacn made tho play for the first three games in the third set, but thereafter Andrews was exceptionally steady, and won the games and remaining set at 6-2. ■ D G. France took J. McCausland into camp in three seta, 8-10, 6-2, 6-1. The match was uninteresting from the spectators viewpoint, for, apart from occasional incursions to the net, -the players fought a baseline duel, driving deep to the corners, until one or the other missed. The feature of the match was McCauslaud's wonderful recovery in the first iet. He was at one stage down 2-5, concentrating on Frances back-hand, and speeding up hia ground shots, he rattled the Wellington man, who became inconsistent, and finally dropped the sat at 8-10. Early in the second set France down to" his game, and, exploiting every shot in his kit, he won tho remaining two setß and the match with tho loss of three games. I Davig Cup form was shown in the meeting of the first doubles teams, in which Ollivier and "Wilson decisively defeated, the Peach brothers, who won only four games in two sets.
