BEAM WIRELESS.
-—♦— ' AUSTRALIAN TESTS. \ SOME PUZZLING RESULTS. (BT CABLE—PKBBB ASBOCIMIOH—COFntIGHT.) (ACSTSALUS iX6: K.B. CABLE iSSOCUTIOS.) LONDON, January 14. The first day of the offloial test of the beam wireless was not altogether discouraging. It began at ten o'olock, Greenwich time, but for some unknown reason reception was variable. Then & valve blew out. After this was replaced tho results steadily improved till the middle of the afternoon, when a bun- < dred words a minute were comfortably exceeded, and maintained for a Rood spoil. Signals from Melbourne were strong and clear. Though it is uncertain whether 6even hours' continuous service will be achieved to-day, it can be said that the result was far superior to Canada's first day. ■ • • The test experts are puasled to knowwhy night reception in London remains poor, the Australian signals scarcely coming through. . Ifc is understood that London's night outward signals were weak at the Australian end. It is suggested that this may be due to seasonal influence, and perhaps will be entirely different during the summer. Meanwhile indications are that the best Beven-hour period will be day-titoe in London and night-time in Australia. , Experiments are still going on for a 24 hours' service.
A BETTER RESULT. . l
