BISHOPSCOURT.

PROTEST AGAINST SALE. DEPUTATION TO SYNOD. The Christchurch Diocesan Synod received a deputation last night eonwt. mg of Messrs George Harper, John Btndholme, John Bhodes, M. Cottoril], »„$ C. C. Corfe, to protest agaimt the subdivision and sale of part of Bishow. court.

Mr Harper said that the deputation had had previous intercourse with toe joint committee set up by the Synod to see it there was no way of *lt«. ing their decision to sell part of Bishop. court. Nobody had known earlier h the year what was being dona, but it was reported that a plan had ben prepared for subdivision and sale of part of Bishopscourt. The deputed had met late in March, and sent a letter to the joint committee on April Bth. No reply had been received till May 3rd. The deputation had inspected the place and noted that if tie sections were sold, trees sixty yean old would have to come down, and the privacy of the new house, would be destroyed. He was sure that the iotas committee must have come to their conclusions very reluctantly. They hid stated that they wanted funds to build the new Bishopscourt, and the sale of property would decrease the expenses of upkeep. Mr Harper thought these ressons no longer obtained. He had found that it was not in the power of tie Church Property Trustees to use fund* from the sale of the land to build Bishopscourt. In addition a fund was going to be allowed Bishops for maintaining the property.

Other Means of Baking Fonda. This was not only a matter of tke present. If the sections were parted with there would be no place for diocesan purposes in tho future. To subdivide would be disastrous. He asked the Synod to stay the hand of the joint committee with regard to the sale of the frontage. Localities like Bishopscourt were extremely rare. Finally he had heard from reliable sources, that if the worst came to the wont, and funds u 3 badly needed, there would be a substantial response from the public, either to provide a fund to maintenance, or to purchase the section facing Park terrace (at present tie Bishopscourt lawn). Mr Studholme pointed out that had was not a saleable commodity at tat present time, and a delay in the nk would probably bo advantageous. I» Bishopscourt there were left only Si acres, a very small reserve to meet tie needs for any buildings, which it nigat be desired to erect near Bishopseont for Church purposes in future ye»a If a mistake were found to be Bl* in deferring the sale of Bithoptewrt that mistake could be rectified b» year.
