A MAIN HIGHWAY?

RICCARTON ROAD AGAIN. When speaking of the Maia Highways Board, Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., Mayor of Riccarton, stated at last night's meeting of the Riccarton Boj'ough Council that he had not been satisfied with answers he had received from the Highways Board people, and that when he was in Wellington recently he interviewed the Minister for Public Works concerning Riccarton road.

As everyone knew, the Borough Council had been endeavouring to have the Riccarton road declared a main highway for some time, and when speaking to the Minister he had pointed out to him that the Riccarton road passed into the City of Christchurch and he had told him that it carried about 93 per cent, of foreign traffic. "The outcome, gentleman, was that it was considered that it would be a good idea if wo got down to something concrete," ho said. "I think iz would be a good idea if wo got the advice of an engineer as to whether concrete or bitumen would be best, and place it before tho Highways Board. I'm sure we shall get their help if we go the right way about it." He added that the Council would confer with tho Tramway Board as to tho material to be used on the road, etc., and he said he bolioved that if it were at all possible to amend the regulations the Highways Board would do its best if the Council got a definite proposal and placed it before the Board. It was admitted that the money should bo used, but there was tho question: Would the Board share a proportion of the construction of a new road? At present it was willing only to assist in the maintenance. Councillors were- unanimous that something should be done in the matter.
