UNEMPLOYMENT AND COUNTRY WORK.

[ 10 THE EDITOB 0* THB PBEBB. Sir,—Last week a well-known farmer in my district saw a report in your paper saying there were hundreds of unemployed, so he thought it would be. a good time to get a man, and he went to town the next day. lie did not find many willing to go out in the country. The first asked if there was a seat on the plough, but the said no, he would have to walk, to keep warm in the winter. The s next quear tion was, Is there any other men keptf When he was told there was only one other on the place—that was the farmer lnmselt—he said it would be too quiet. Tlie second man asked how much was the train fare, and the would-fce employer said it would cost about 4s. The man informed him he had not enough to pay the fare, whereupon the farmer gave him 5s for fare on the promise that he came out next day. It is nearly a week ago now, and he has still not come. Could vou tell me how it is these men will nob come out to these places, although they are offered good houses and good Vaces? Also what becomes of all the shearers and harvesters who earn , big .wages in the season—whereto they.get to in the winter time?- Iliey are no fools: they won't come out in the country while they can get coddled up in town with these so-called -leaders who are breaking their necks to get m the Hmelieht in this business of unemployment. I know there are deserving cases, hut there is a" big which doesn't want work. If neededl will give name of farmer mentioned. Yours, etc., A? _ TI red.
