Walden, while in the ; law- < ful execution of his duty. Mr Brady 1 appeared for accused, and pleaded guil- a ty. < Senior-Sergeant Fahcy said that the : accused were off the Canadian Con- 1 queror. At 9.40 k3t night the accus- 1 ed, along with three other men, wore 1 in the Grand lounge, causing trouble. ' The proprietor went into the pictures ' and secured a constable, who was in I plain clothes. Constable Walden. went ' into the Grand lounge, and asked the ' men to be quiet. They asked who he J was and Walden said that he was a ■ constable. The men,left the tea rooms ; and when the constable was walking | down the street after them, 1 ho heard them Bay: "We will fix him." They then set on to Constable Walden, one ! of the men knocking him down, while the others set on to him and' kicked him. At this time two other constables arrived,.and the crowd scattered, but Constables Weame and Mclnnes. managed to secure one man each. Tho men had had drink and that was the cause of tho trouble. Mr Brady said the men were in a crowd arid could not recollect what part they actually took. Accused said they did not know that Constable Walden was a coristablo,. as ho was in plain clothes. The Magistrate: He told you ho was a constable. Accused: Anyone could say that. The Magistrate: iThe police represent law and order in this country and anyone who assaults one of them, must be . dealt with. Each accused will be convicted and sentenced to 24 days' imprisonment with hard labour. TEMUKA. There was,a very large gathering of the public at the Temtika Post Office on Monday afternoon to welcome- the Indian Army hockey team. The Mayor (Mr G. B. Cartwright), on behalf of the citizens of ■, Temuka and district, welcomed tho visitors, and in the course of his remarks referred to the great interest Temuka citizens had takon in their tour through New Zealand,- and hoped they would find , their stay in Temuka a very happy one. He regretted they could not make a longer stay, as the citizens would have had a better opportunity to show them round : the district. . The Mayor called _ for three cheers, which were heartily given. Mr Gordon P. Wood, president of the South Canterbury Hockey Association, also extended, on behalf of the Association, a very hearty welcome, and called for three cheers. Captain Cowan, on behalf of the visitors, thanked all for their hearty welcome. He regretted that owing to a very bad cold he was unablo to say all he would like to. He hoped that in a few. years' time they would meet toegther again at Temuka. The Mayor called for another_ three cheers, which was again heartily responded to, and the visitors then left for their billets. A very enjoyable euchre party was held in the Catholic Club rooms on Fridav, and of the three ladies who tied " for first place, Miss F. Esplin carried the honours, with' Miss Shiels second, and Mrs Jamieson third. The men's first prize'fell to Mr W. McGarva, and the second to Mr W. D. Fitzgerald. Miss Rita Smart (Temuka) is spending a short holiday with Mrs A. MacFarlane (Fendalton). Mrs F. W. Salmon gave a very pleasant afternoon on Monday in honour of her mother, Mrs Blaithwaite (Christchurch). The ladies present were: Mesdamcs J. Olliver, C. E. Bremner, F. Hayhurst, Harrison, A. Gapper, G. N. Watson, Routledge, and F. A.- Joynt. During the afternoon a number of musical items were given, and'much enjoyed.
