ITALIANS ON PUBLIC WORKS.

EXPLANATION BY MINISTER. (6rECIAL TO THE PBESS.) WELLINGTON, June 22. ' The Hon. Mr K. S. Williams, Minister for Public Works, speaking in the House to-night, replied to the charge that Italians in large numbers had been taken on at Mangahao, to the detriment of British workmen. He said that he had made enquiries, and found that 42 Italians were employed there, but most of them had been there for nearly four years, and no discrimination had been shown by the Department. He assured members that the Public Works Department had every sympathy with the unemployed, &vl would make every endeavour to lind work for them. At the same time he, as Minister for Public Works, had to see that the regular employees of the Department were not thrown out of wortsIt had also to-be borne in mmd that not all the unemployed were suitable for the work the Public Works Department had to offer, and moreover that the New Zealand climate placed seasonal limitations on the class of worK that would be undertaken. -The Department, however, would do the besti it could under the circumstances.
