NEW CABLES.

DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY. PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE. Many people who pass the Municipal Electricity Department's building daily have been interested by the work going forward in a large trehoh at the Armagh street comer. The operations were explained to the City Council last evening by the Electricity Committee.,, which reported:— "For the information of Councillors, the committee has to report that the work now in progress in Armagh street results from the fact that this footpath has reached its full capacity in cables in one layer. To provide for future growth it is now necessary to arrange For cables to be carried in a number of layers as their number increases. The requirements for such a purpose cannot be met as the need arises. It is therefore necessary to provide for a number of years ahead, in such a way that new cables can be drawn in without opening up the footpath. "This work was Authorised by the Council at its meeting on November 23rd, 1926, and is now in progress. Owing to the presence of the cables, most of them carrying load con* famously, the work can be done only in sections) and one-half of the footway opened at a time. The manholes giving entry to the Power House involve cutting through part of the foundations. "It is hoped this information will explain to Councillors the need, extent, and pa-ogress of the work, which marks a stage of development in the growth of the system." The report was adopted.
