BRYNDWR-HAREWOOD BUS.

TO THE rMTOB OT THB rRESI. Sir.—Through the medium of your valued paper I would like to express appreciation of the attitude taken up by tho Papanui Progress League iu regard to the "'Bryndwr-llarcwood bus service, and tho tactics of the Christchurch Tramway .Board iu putting a "rover" bus on the road iu opposition to a service that was of great value to tho public along the routes on which Mr Sanders ran Just such a service was what the people of Harewould have long needed and hoped for; it was of benefit to them, and to tho City, too, l'b r the matter of that. The fares, viz. 9d from .Harewood school, were so reasonable that many would take advantage of it rathci than usetheir own conveyance. Whatever position the Progress League take up to have this servico restarted, they can be assured of very strong support from this end of tho district.—Yours, etc., THOS. CROSLAN'D. June 18th, ■1926.' TO TIIE EDITOR OF THE TRESS. Sir, —Commenting on tho criticism made at a meeting of the Tramway Works Committee, with regard to the action of tho Papanui Progress League, permit me, as an interested ratepayer, to state that as far as tho Tramway Board's trams and buses arc concerned, they hare .already put us all "'" tho soup" financially,, but they do not seem able to realise'the fact that we as ratepayers hero are part of the whole that will be called upon to assist them out, and that we consider we aro as much entitled to service at their hands as are residents on tho Papanui toad and Feudal ton lines.' This area is a wide one, lying between two tramway routes. The Tramway Board with their bus will attempt to give a service to an inner portion- only of this area. Now, Sir, as ratepayers equally liable with the parts served by the Board, arc riot those who are further out, and also those on the streets not served by thetramway bus, but wlio aro served by the private bus, entitled to a private service which will cost the "ratepayers nothing? If tho Board are going on as in tho past, a rate will be inevitable, and perhaps a little business opposition' inav help to put them on their feet. When tho Tramway Board aro invited to giro their ratepayers a servico and thev refuse to do so, have they any right to say, "We will not, give you a service, neither shall you have "a. private service" ? The service referred to cannot be termed "pirate, as -.it has only touched the tramway route where it could not avoid doing so, and it has not reduced fares as stated, —Yours.-etc., S. H. COX. June 10th, 192 G.
