THE CITY AND THE PORT.
TO THE EDITOR. Or "THE PRESS."- ■ Sir,—ln "The Press" of April 30th you print a very interesting contribution regarding City and Port, and the problem of communication with the son. No doubt tho suggestions for .improvement contained in that report will be very much discussed all who are lnteres'ted in the'progress of Canterbury, as all are agreed that one of the problems to solve is direct communication with the sea. And although your contributors have come to the conclusion that it is not in the interest of the City and district that any artificial harbour should be constructed outside of Port Lyttelton, I would offer another suggestion for the improvement of access to the sea. If the Waimakariri River Trust straightens the river from Stewart's Gully railway bridge to the sea, there will be nearly two miles of straight river that can be made any desired width and depth, and would make a good port which would benefit all Canterbury,, and Cliristchurch in particular.—Yours, etc., WAIMAK.
