TRAMWAY BOARD.

ORDINARY MEETING. ' Tiio Tramway Board met yesterday. Present—Messrs W. J. Walter (chairman), D. Sykes, "E. W. White, H. Pearce, John Wood, A. S. Taylor, J. A. Flesher, Geo. T. Booth, and the Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C. Tho report of the Works and Traffic Committee, which was adopted, stated that surplus cash paid in by conductors had amounted- to £872 16s 3d einco December, 1921. When a conductor has a surplus against his name, this is deducted from his deficiencies within a. certain period. The amounts thus credited aggregate £B2l 17s 2d in tho period mentioned. There is now a credit balance of £SO 193 Id, .which will be transferred to the employees' sick benefit fund. Tho Board's steam plant was engaged on Friday night generating current for trajnway purposes, thus relieving the demand on the Lake Coleridge power-house. It had been decided to heat the car pita in which men work at night by means cf a hot wafer system, at an estimated .ost of. £9OO. • Amongst the work done at the Board's workshop during the four weeks ended March, 31sfc wa3 the complete overhauling of 19 electric cara and 21 trailers; and the painting of six eleclrio cars and fivo trailers. The first of (ho new electric core had been completed, and tho remainder were well forward, and would go out at the rate of one a fortnight. Tir-seahr.g work had been started from St. Peter's to the Hea:hcote bridge; from StanmoTe bridge to Butwood church; in Sumner and around Clifton; and Papanui road from tho end of the double track to Harewood road. The temporary «'eviation round Clifton had been taken up, and a good tarred surfiico left where the track was laid. Correspondence. • A letter was received from the Mayer of Christclmrch, relative to work being put in hand to provide employment during the winter. Tho Keathcote County Council, leplying to the Board's suggestion that the county Bhould put the remainder of Page's road in a condition equal to that tho Board in-, tended to put the portion on which the tramway tracks are laid, etated . that tho upkeep of tho road was shared by several local bodies, and that an application had been made to have the road declared a. main highway. Tho Council hoped that the Board would go on with the work of laying the tramway tracks in accordance with the latest method of bitumen construction,, as it might encourage the other local bodies to adopt the same method. The letter was received. . , It was decided to thank tbo Drainage Board for deciding to lay a subsidiary sewer on the south side of Riccarton road. The Town Clerk, Christchurch, wrote detailing the steps being taken to improyo the condition of Slater and "Warden streets. The General Manager stated that, following the receipt of this letter, the Boards application to alter the route of the Shirley bus had been withdrawn.
