SHIPPING NOTES. Conditions in tlie Tort, which has been working to capacity during the past lew days, should return to nearly normal to-day. The congestion of shipping, owing to the waterfront dispute, has been serious, hut with the departure o£ several of the larger steamers last evening, the position has hecomo easier. The steamor City of Batavia, which has been in the stream since Saturday awaiting n Berth, will commence discharging: to-day. Tiie Breeze is due this morning from Timaru, and loads for Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. Tho Gale should he here to-day from flio north. She is to sail this afternoon with cargo for Dunedin and Timaru. The John is now due tomorrow from V ellington to load for Wellington, Wanganui, ami New Plymouth. The Pakura was due during Inst night from Tokomnru Bay with sheep. She is to sail immediately on completing discharge for Picton. The Kurow is to sail at noon to-day lor Wellington and Auckland. The Wootton is to complete loading here today for Wellington. The Kauri commenced loading here yesterday for Napier, Oisborno, and Aucklaud. She is to «»il on Friday next. Tho Wnihmn is toned to sail on Thursday for DuueUin and Now Flymouth, to complete discharge of hep San Franciscan cargo. The C-alm is due on Thursday from the north, aud is to sail in the afternoon with cargo for Bluff, Dunedin, and Timaru. The Opihi should be here on Thursday to load for Nelson and New Plymouth. The Waipahi sailed last night with cargo for Wellington, New Plymouth, and Auckland. The Ulimaroa left Sydney at noon on Friday for Wellington. She is due there today, and sails on Friday next on the return trip to Sydney. The New Zealand Shipping Company is in receipt of cable advice that tho Baron Murray arrived at Newport News on April 27th from St. John, en route to Aucklaud, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The C. and D. Line advises that the Port Pirie is expected to clear New York tomorrow with general merchandise for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The Shaw-Savill Company's steamer Mahia was to leave Wanganui yesterday for loadiug at Picton and Wellington, and is due at Wellington to-morrow evening. She sails from Wellington on May Bth for Lyttelton, and is expected to clear this port on May 14th for London, via Montevideo and Teneriffc. The Federal S.N. Company's steamer Hurunui left New Plymouth on Friday for Wanganui roadstead' to continue her loading. The vessel is to leare the roadstead to-day for Lyttelton and Wellington to complete her cargo. She is now due at Wellington on May 10th, and sails on May 12th for Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and Avonmouth. The Federal Company advises that the Tekoa is to leave Lyttelton to-day for Port Chalmers and Napier to discharge and load. The vessel later loads at Gisborne, Auckland,

CARGO SCARCE. (FHOM OUE OWM CORRESPONDS!*!'.) LONDON, March 23. Shipping companies trading with Australia and New Zealand, are suffering at present from a scarcity of freight. Owing to the slump in beef from the Argentine, very little beef is coming from the two Dominions. Wheat cargoes should have aaved the aitußtion somewhat, but the freight from Australia has fallen to 22s 6d a, ton. From the River Plate it is only lis fid a ton. Outward cargoes liavo elso gone off considerably. The s,s. Totara. At Uje end of this week a srnall steamer bought by the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Line, of Nelßon, will sail ironi Hull for the Dominion. The vessel waa built about a. year ac;o for Messrs C. F. Birch and Son, of Hull, hut she has never been placed in commission yet. A certain number of alterations have had to be made to fit her for tho New Zealand trade. Originally named the Margaret Birch, she baa now been renamed the Totara. Her dimensions are 135 feet by 25 feet by 32 feet. She has a deadweight of 428 tons, a gross nage of 401 tons, and a net toiinage of 147 tons. She ma,kes eight k«pts burping eight ton.'! of coal a day. The small steamer will go by way of Suez, calling at Port Said, Colombo, and Frcmantle.

She should sail on Thursday night for Dunodiu. The City of Batavia is due to arrive from Lyttelton "tomorrow to dischrere American case oil and general cargo. Under favourable conditions she should sail on Friday for the south. The Reraucra is also set down fo arrive from Lyttelton to-morrow. Sho will load wool, frozen meat, and gcuoral cargo for the United Kingdom, and will then return to Lyttelton, from which port sho will proceed to Wellington. Messrs J. M. McMeekin and Co. eipcct the Holmdale to reach Timaru from southern ports on Friday to load a consignment of general cargo for Wellington and Wanganui.
