COLLISION CASES; !,< ' ,(fbib3 association tmjigbax.) . AUCEIiAItfD, May h . Judgment in regard to the collision on July i Ist ■ between the ■ Union . -Company's steamer "Wainui and the fisljing launch Iris Eileen, evidence on which \;as heard by * nautical' Appeal Court, was delivered by Mr Justice Herdinan. He found that the maister of the Wainui committed as error of judgment by failing to keep the Iris Eileen on his starboard bow and by altering his course to cross her bows.' The second contributing factor was want of skill in'seamanship on the- part of the master'of the Iris Eileen, his ignorance of the regulations for preventing collisions, ancl his inability to cope with the emergency. The Court suggested- that the Marine Department should consider whether masters of . steam launches like the Iris-Eileen should be allowed to navigate except After proof, of the possession of some elementary knowledge of the principles of' navigation and rea«sonable acquaintance with* the rules for the prevention of collisions. at sea. In an appeal for decision in regard to the collision between thb ferry steamer Albatross and the auxiliary ketch Scot on August 6th, the CoUrt found that the master of the Albatross was not in any- way responsible for the collision; and owing to the dense fog the meeting of the two vessels.was so sudden and unexpected that the Court doubted very much whether omissions oil. the part of . the master of the Scot contributed : to any material extent to the casualty.
